Porto vs Lyon Head-to-Head

Porto and Lyon haven’t met for 18 years. Last time they did, Porto won 4-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the 2003-04 Champions League and Jose Mourinho’s side shockingly went on to win the competition.

Porto’s Home-Field Advantage

Porto had an excellent week, defeating Sporting 2-1 in the first leg of the Taca de Portugal semifinals and beating Pacos Ferreira 4-2 in the Primeira Liga. Both wins came on the road, but they’ll be back in Porto for their Europa League Round of 16 match vs Lyon.

Domestically, Porto have been one of the best soccer picks this season as they’re undefeated in the league. They also came out on top in a hard-fought, first knockout-round matchup vs Lazio. Porto won the first leg 2-1 and grinded out a 2-2 draw to make it to the Round of 16.

Brazilian forward Evanilson has been on fire, scoring four goals in his last three matches for the club. Mehdi Taremi has also been a huge contributor with 13 goals and 11 assists in the league.

It’s tough to beat Porto at home as only Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have managed the feat in 19 matches. However, Porto’s goals-against average has gone up from 0.76 per game in the league to 1.75 per game in European competition. They’ve also failed to keep a shutout in each of their last five European matches.

Furthermore, after putting together an eight-game winning streak from December to early February, Porto have drawn three of their last six matches. Still, they haven’t lost for three months and Lyon will have their work cut out for them.

Lyon Perfect in Group Stage

Peter Bosz has had a challenging first season as Lyon manager and his club is in ninth place in Ligue 1. Still, they’re just six points outside of a Champions League place and did pick up a tidy 4-1 win at Lorient on Friday. Forward Romain Faivre scored his first two goals for Lyon after making the switch from Brest in January.

Lyon bounced back nicely from a 1-0 loss vs Lille and have a crucial game vs fourth-place Rennes on Sunday. First, they’ll look to extend their perfect Europa League record on Wednesday. Lyon finished first in Group A, getting a bye to the Round of 16, and scored the most goals and had the best goal difference in the Group Stage.

Remember, Lyon are just two years removed from a Champions League semifinal appearance and have typically done well in European competition. While they’ve been too inconsistent in Ligue 1, they’ve been a great pick to bet online in the Europa League.

Yet, Porto represents a tough test and Lyon have been just okay away from home. They’re a decent 7-5-4 on the road but have lost just one of their last eight away matches.

Bosz has quite a few players out injured as Sinaly Diomande, Tanguy Ndombele and Leo Dubois are targeting returns in the next few weeks. Midfielder Rayan Cherki is out until May with a foot injury.

Porto vs Lyon Prediction

Nothing stands out on the odds board as having great value, but it is worth noting how consistently Porto has put the ball in the net lately. They’re on a run of 21 consecutive games with a goal and I expect that streak to continue here.

Lyon have a few goal threats of their own in Faivre, Lucas Paqueta, Moussa Dembele and Karl Toko Ekambi. OL averaged 2.67 goals per game in the Group Stage and should also be expected to get on the scoreboard. Bet sports online and go with over 2½ goals in what should be an exciting contest.

Pick: Over 2½ goals (-140)
