Portugal: Attacking Firepower

Portugal was one of the absolute shocks to not automatically qualify for this year’s World Cup. Serbia managed to beat them 2-1 in the Group Stage, forcing Euro 2016 winners to go down the playoffs route after finishing second in their group. Portugal has won 10 on the bounce at home in qualification before Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Tadic put them to the sword in November.

Portugal is fully packed with world-class players, and under-pressure manager Fernando Santos has named a strong squad for the final games. Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio, the Manchester United trio of Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester City stars Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva, Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota, Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao are among the players included.

Cancelo is suspended for this clash but he will play in case Portugal qualifies further. Manchester City’s Ruben Dias is out injured while Port rock-solid center-back Pepe is out with Covid-19.

Portugal is struggling under Santos’ management. Their World Cup qualification hopes hang by a thread, and it is still not clear what Portugal’s best starting lineup is. The European giants will be desperate to feature in Qatar in December, so despite injuries to key players, their quality and desire will help them prevail.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s form at club level has been far from impressive, despite a recent hat trick against Tottenham. However, he will surely be the player to watch as we expect him to lead his team on the pitch. Portugal is underpriced so we don’t recommend you include them in your soccer picks and parlays.

Turkey: Embarrassing Euro 2020

Since getting knocked out of Euro 2020 with zero points to their name and eight goals conceded in three games, Turkey suffered just one defeat in seven fixtures. Following the disastrous campaign at Euro 2020, Turkey has looked abroad for its new coach and appointed Germany Under-21s coach Stefan Kuntz. The German coach has some experience in Turkish football as he played for Besiktas for one season.

In Turkey, he took over a squad that is brimming with promising talent and had impressed leading into last year’s Euros. Despite conceding 16 goals in 10 group fixtures, Turkey finished second, three points above Norway.

Turkey enters this clash as heavy underdogs, but they have nothing to lose and we expect them to give their best on the pitch on Thursday. They have a great defense and midfield with the likes of Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu, Atalanta’s Merih Demiral, Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu and Marseille’s Cengiz Under expected to feature in the starting lineup. Kuntz has no suspension or injury concerns to work around and will welcome Mert Muldur back from a ban served in the Montenegro win, although Zeki Celik will still expect to get the nod at right-back.

Portugal vs Turkey Head-to-Head

In eight mutual encounters between the two teams, Portugal holds the clear advantage, having won six games. If you’re betting online, it’s important to note that we’ve never seen a draw between the two national teams.

The two countries last faced each other way back in 2012, with Turkey beating Portugal 3-1 in a friendly fixture on a brace from striker Umut Bolut and an own goal from center-back Pepe earning a victory for Turkey.

Portugal vs Turkey Predictions

Portugal enters this clash as heavy favorites at -270 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds.

At least three goals have been scored in five of Portugal’s last six outings across all competitions, with the teams netting at least three goals in four of those games. Five of Turkey’s last six fixtures have also witnessed over 2.5 goals scored and that includes a huge 6-0 win over Gibraltar and the 6-1 loss to the Netherlands. Ronaldo is the highest-scoring international footballer of all time and, at the age of 37, he shows no signs of slowing down. If you like your props, he is the player to bet on.

While Turkey will take confidence from their recent run of form, they have all been against teams whom they would have expected to beat. One European superpower, the Netherlands, simply destroyed them a few months ago. Portugal’s defensive injuries will give Turkey an opportunity to contribute on the scoreboard. Yes, Portugal will probably win this clash, but there’s no value in a home win. Instead, we are going with goals because we expect a high-scoring affair.

Pick: Over 2½ goals -135
