PSV vs Ajax Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds, Picks & Predictions

First Place on Line in Eredivisie

I started the year saying that the Eredivisie is more entertaining than Ligue 1. I don’t regret it, in fact, I’m here to invite you to wake up early on Sunday. Otherwise, you’ll miss PSV vs Ajax, the game that could end up defining the next Eredivisie champion.

Ajax remains the betting online favorite to win the title and dominates the odds board for this game at -110. However, things could drastically change if PSV pulls off the upset at home.

PSV vs Ajax 2022 Eredivisie Fixture 20

PSV in the Front Seat

If the season ended today, PSV would be the champion. They currently sit in first place with a one-point advantage over Ajax, 47 goals for and 24 against. Only Ajax has scored more goals than them.

Winning their last five games in a row is what boosted them to the top. One of two teams in the Eredivisie that are on a winning streak, the other being AZ Alkmaar. Most recently, they fulfilled their role as soccer betting favorites by defeating Groningen 1-0 with a goal from Mario Gotze. Defensively, they didn’t even allow a single shot on target.

Midweek, they also advanced to the Dutch Cup Quarterfinals after beating SC Telstar 2-1. That was expected, but still, we’re talking about an extra dose of motivation right before a pretty important match.

Ibrahim Sangare won’t be available due to the African Cup of Nations, while Andre Ramalho is out due to injury. Knowing things like that could happen, PSV recently signed Joey Veerman from Heerenveen.

“Joey is versatile enough to play in multiple positions and we think he will add creativity to the squad,” said Director of Football John de Jong in an interview. He’s not wrong, plus, having a deeper roster can make a huge difference at the end of the season.

PSV predicted lineup: Joel Drommel; Jordan Teze, Armando Obispo, Olivier Boscagli, Philipp Max; Joey Veerman, Marco van Ginkel, Mario Gotze; Ritsu Doan, Cody Gakpo, Maximiliano Romero.

Ajax Not Missing Haller

Sebastien Haller is one of the hottest players in Europe this season. He’s the top scorer in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League. The thing is that he’s currently playing in the African Cup of Nations. Initially, Ajax feared to play without him, but the reigning champions have kept winning, big time.

After losing 2-1 to AZ Alkmaar, Ajax won its three next games with a 10-0 aggregate. Most recently, they defeated Utrecht 3-0 on the road with Brian Brobbey as the Man of the Match after scoring twice.

Precisely, Brobbey is one of the reasons why Haller hasn’t been missed. The 19-year-old striker returned just in time after playing the first half of the season for RB Leipzig in Germany.

The reigning champs also have Danilo Pereira, who scored four goals in their midweek 9-0 victory over Excelsior Maassluis. No, that’s not a typo, and yes, Ajax also advanced to the Dutch Cup Quarterfinals without any trouble.

There shouldn’t be any doubt about Ajax dominating the Las Vegas odds for this one. We’re talking about the top scoring team in the league with an average of 3.1 goals per game. That’s not all, they also are the best defensive team after allowing only four goals in 19 games.

Ajax predicted lineup: Remko Pasveer; Noussair Mazraoui, Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martinez, Daley Blind; Edson Alvarez, Ryan Gravenberch, Steven Berghuis; Antony, Dusan Tadic, Brian Brobbey.

PSV vs Ajax Head to Head

  • Previous Matches: 143
  • PSV Victories: 57 (233 goals)
  • Ajax Victories: 59 (237 goals)
  • Draws: 27

Here’s why PSV isn’t the favorite to win the title despite sitting in first place. Ajax won their first meeting of the season…5-0! No, that’s not a typo either. The reigning champs had a glorious second half in which they scored four goals. All five goals were scored by a different player.

Ajax hasn’t lost to PSV in their last six encounters, however, three of those games finished with a draw. Finally, the last time Ajax didn’t score when playing against PSV was in the 2016-17 season. Expect goals from both.

PSV vs Ajax Prediction

Do yourself a favor and wake up early on Sunday. I don’t think PSV is ready to defeat Ajax, but they don’t need to do that. The home side will remain atop the standings with a draw, which is precisely my football prediction. Before you start complaining about getting up early on a Sunday for a draw, let me add something. I also expect a goal-fest, enough for the total to go over three goals. Just like it happened in three of their last six meetings.

Score Prediction: PSV 2, Ajax 2

Pick: Draw at +290
