RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich Head to Head

Bayern and Salzburg met twice in the Group Stage of last season’s Champions League. Bayern won both meetings, picking up a huge 6-2 road win and a 3-1 victory in Munich. Mergim Berisha, who now plays for Fenerbahce, scored in both matches for Salzburg, but Robert Lewandowski scored three goals in the two matches for Bayern.

Austrians Finally on the Big Stage

Bayern Munich isn’t the only European club with a long title streak. Red Bull Salzburg are well on their way to winning the Austrian Bundesliga for a ninth consecutive season. They completed a comeback last Friday over Rapid Wien to maintain a 14-point lead at the top of the table. Noah Okafor and Brenden Aaronson found the net in the 2-1 win.

While Salzburg have dominated Austrian soccer for the last decade and been a great pick to bet online, they haven’t fared as well in European competition. This is the first time they’ve reached the last 16 of the Champions League and they were thrown into the fire by being drawn against Bayern.

It came down to the last match of group play for Red Bull to clinch their knockout round berth. They passed a tough test vs Sevilla and won 1-0 to finish second in Group G behind Lille. It appears that Salzburg’s model of signing and developing young talent is working.

The average age of their team is just 22.5 and their leading scorers, Karim Adeyemi and Okafor, are 20 and 21, respectively. So, most players on their team have never played in a match of this magnitude.

RB Salzburg also have quite a few injuries coming into this one and two regulars, forward Benjamin Sesko and left back Bernardo, are both out.

Bayern to Focus on Defense

Bayern Munich conceded four goals in the first half of a Bundesliga match for the first time since 1975 in a shocking 4-2 loss at VfL Bochum on Saturday. It would be easy to say Bayern missed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but not even he would have been able to stop the incredible goals scored by Bochum.

The Bavarians still hold a six-point lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table, but they’ve conceded a lot lately. Bayern has allowed seven goals in their last three matches and with Neuer out for the foreseeable future after undergoing knee surgery, it’s an uncertain time for them.

Dependable left back Alphonso Davies has been out for a month with myocarditis and midfield presence Leon Goretzka has dealt with injury problems all season. In a season complicated by injury and coronavirus absences, as young winger Jamal Musiala recently tested positive, there’s been one big constant.

Lewandowski scored both of Bayern’s goals vs Bochum and the Polish striker has put together yet another world-class season. He has an astounding 26 goals in 22 Bundesliga matches and scored nine goals in the Group Stage of the Champions League. He trails only Ajax’s Sebastien Haller for the competition lead.

As long as Lewandowski is on the team, Bayern will be one of the better soccer picks out there. It will be interesting to see if first-year head coach Julian Nagelsmann has any adjustments to make after the loss at the weekend.

RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich Prediction

Bayern Munich has a lot of experience on their side and the core of the team that won the 2020 Champions League remains. Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller don’t get as much press as Lewandowski, but they’re the engines that make this team tick.

I expect Bayern to put together a much better defensive performance here and solve the issues that plagued them vs Bochum. For online sports betting, take under 3½ goals in this match.

Pick: Under 3½ goals (-120)
