Urgency for Rapids
Last season, the Colorado Rapids finished the MLS regular season atop the Western Conference with a 17-10-7 record. This season, they already lost eight games, including three of their last four. In other words, they must win in Utah against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
The thing is, Real Salt Lake is unbeaten when at home and is in third place in the Western Conference. That’s why the Claret and Cobalt dominate the soccer lines at +105. However, we’re talking about the Rocky Mountain Cup and anything can happen in a derby.
Real Salt Lake: You Shall Not Pass
Besides remaining unbeaten when playing at home with a 6-2-0 record, Real Salt Lake hasn’t allowed a single goal in its last three games at Rio Tinto Stadium. Most recently, they drew 0-0 with the Columbus Crew. The Claret and Cobalt haven’t kept a clean sheet in four straight home matches since 2010, meaning they could rewrite history on Saturday.
Last Sunday, RSL visited Minnesota United and lost 3-2. They were down 3-0, meaning they almost pulled off an epic comeback. Jefferson Savarino had a goal and an assist in Minnesota. That was his second game with a goal and an assist in his three starts since returning to Utah. Savarino has been involved in all four RSL’s goals since his first start back with the team on June 18. Basically, he’s the main reason for you to consider including them in your soccer picks.
“We’re going up against a team we know really well, so that should be motivation enough. The most important thing is to remember that the mindset when you go down a goal is to make sure it’s not two,” RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni said in an interview.
Considering their current home record and the fact that they’ve lost only one of their last 21 home games against Colorado, the +105 odds are a great deal for Real Salt Lake.
Colorado Rapids: Time to Wake Up
The Colorado Rapids didn’t have a happy Fourth of July as they lost to visiting Austin FC 3-2. The Rapids blew a two-goal lead and, if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, the Green Machine played the last 15 minutes with one player less.
Their last game on the road was against the Portland Timbers and they got crushed 3-0. The Rapids haven’t lost three straight MLS matches since an eight-game losing streak in 2019, meaning they could also rewrite history on Saturday.
Losing to RSL could make them fall to last place in the West, something unthinkable prior to the start of the season. In fact, the Rapids were among the betting online favorites to dethrone New York City FC as MLS kings.
“It’s certainly a big game, they’re doing well and we’re not doing as well as we’d like to be and there’s no better way to get back on track than to get a good result against RSL, especially at their place,” head coach Robin Fraser explained to the press.
Defeating RSL would also mean their first road victory. That’s right, the Rapids are winless when playing on the road with a 0-2-6 record. Even so, they’re offering a +260 price in the sportsbook. Even so because it could be a lot worse.
