Salzburg: Tough to Play Against

Salzburg’s ability to compete with the top European clubs while using the finest young talent that the continent has to offer is laudable. They are still unbeaten in their group but failure to convert draws into wins has been the downfall of the Austrian champions.

They are sitting second in group E just one point behind Chelsea and they managed to find the back of the net in their last seven Champions League fixtures. Despite playing Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, they are winless in all seven of their European matches against English teams.

Salzburg’s fate remains in their own hands ahead of this round of fixtures, and a victory would be enough to earn them a spot in the last 16. AC Milan, Sevilla, Bayern Munich and Lille are among the clubs to have failed to win against Salzburg in Austria. We won’t include them in our soccer picks and parlays, but we do expect them to find the back of the net.

Justin Omoregie, Fernando, Ousmane Diakite, Nicolas Capaldo, Sekou Koita and Dijon Kameri are all among the players expected to miss out for the hosts. Key midfielder Luka Sucic has also emerged as a fresh concern with an adductor injury after being forced to pull out of the match with Sturm Graz.

Chelsea: Top of the Group

The Blues suddenly look much stronger on defense and much more effective with their pressing. They are unbeaten in the last eight games across all competitions, but they were kept to back-to-back draws in the Premier League by Brentford and Man United.

Scoring has been the issue for Chelsea with their only goal across the last two games coming from the penalty spot. They are leading their UCL group and will be confirmed as leaders if they win, and Dinamo Zagreb loses to AC Milan. Chelsea has claimed seven points from their three games under their new boss Graham Potter, which has put them in the top spot.

But they will face a stern test against a Salzburg side so if you’re betting online, you should avoid the ML as this clash could go either way. Wesley Fofana and Reece James remain out of the lineup with knee injuries while N’Golo Kante will take a few months to recuperate from hamstring surgery. Kalidou Koulibaly was a notable absentee last weekend against the Red Devils, and Potter declared that the Senegal defender experienced knee pain after the Brentford draw, so he’s listed as doubtful.

Salzburg vs Chelsea Head-to-Head

The reverse match finished in a 1-1 draw. Salzburg has lost only one out of 17 games in all competitions this season and that was in July at Sturm Graz. Chelsea is unbeaten under Potter, winning five of eight games. The teams met twice in recent years and we saw a total of 10  goals in those two matches, although just one of them has gone over 2.5 total goals. RB Salzburg did not go over 2.5 total goals in any of their games in the group so far, while Chelsea only did once.

Salzburg vs Chelsea Betting Lines

Salzburg vs Chelsea Prediction

Despite playing on the road, the Blues enter this clash as favorites being priced at -130 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

This won’t be easy for Chelsea against a team like Salzburg, which is extremely hard to break down. Chelsea had 72 percent of possession in the reverse fixture and still couldn’t win. At the same time, Chelsea won’t risk a defeat here and play open and aren’t likely to allow their opponents much room going forward, having kept five clean sheets in their last six. We expect a low-scoring affair, so we’re backing the under.
