Europa League Round of 16
Last Friday, Sevilla drew 0-0 to Deportivo Alaves in La Liga. One day later, Real Madrid crushed Real Sociedad 4-1. Now, Los Blancos sit in first place with an eight-point advantage over Sevilla.
That’s why Sevilla is now focusing on winning the UEFA Europa League title. Eliminating West Ham United in the Round of 16 on Thursday won’t be easy, but the soccer odds are on its side. Los Blanquirrojos, who’ll play host in the first leg, are offering a +105 price.
Nothing New for Sevilla
Sevilla already knows what it means to win the UEL. Los Blanquirrojos won the title four times over the last 10 seasons. Most recently, they did it in 2020 after defeating Inter Milan in an epic back-and-forth battle that finished 3-2.
I have no doubt that winning the UEL has always been Sevilla’s main goal. Domestically, they drew in three of their last five games. Resting players ahead of UEL matches has a lot to do with that. Ludwig Augustinsson, Munir El Haddadi, Rafa Mir, Oliver Torres and Luismi Cruz didn’t play last Friday.
Sevilla landed in the UEL after finishing third in Group G of the UEFA Champions League. Later, the Spanish side eliminated Dinamo Zagreb in the UEL Playoffs. Los Blanquirrojos won the first leg at home 3-1 and lost the second one 1-0.
Los Blanquirrojos may be losing the race with Real Madrid, but they own the best defensive record in La Liga. They’ve allowed only 18 goals in 27 games. That should be enough for you to feel comfortable including them in your soccer picks.
Thomas Delaney won’t be available due to suspension while Anthony Martial is questionable due to injury. No excuses for Los Blanquirrojos, though. Playing at home, they must take the reins right from the start. They haven’t lost in their last 10 home games in all competitions (7-3-0). Going to London with an advantage could end up being crucial.
Sevilla’s projected lineup: Yassine Bounou; Jules Kounde, Diego Carlos, Karim Rekik, Marcos Acuna; Fernando Reges, Ivan Rakitic, Lucas Ocampos, Alejandro Gomez, Munir El Haddadi; Rafa Mir.
West Ham in Similar Situation
West Ham is having a great season, but the English Premier League is so competitive that it’s not enough. The Hammers are sitting in sixth place, three points behind fourth place. Their main goal, domestically, is to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
That being said, winning the UEL is also West Ham’s best shot at winning something, especially after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton.
The Hammers’ path to the Round of 16 was very different from Sevilla’s. They had to play the UEL Group Stage and finished atop Group H. They ended with a 4-1-1 record, 11 goals for and only three against. Overall, no other team allowed fewer goals.
Most recently, they lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the EPL. Conceding only one goal against the EPL top-scoring team says a lot about West Ham. Head coach David Moyes has done a great job establishing a winning mentality while balancing the core between experienced and young players.
The Hammers, who have no major injuries to report, are offering a +310 price in the sportsbook. That’s a pretty tempting deal.
West Ham’s projected lineup: Lukasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals, Manuel Lanzini, Nikola Vlasic; Michail Antonio.
Sevilla vs West Ham Head to Head
These two have never met, however, Sevilla has plenty of experience facing English teams. Overall, Los Blanquirrojos own a 12-8-5. On the other hand, West Ham owns a 2-2-1 record against Spanish teams.

Sevilla vs West Ham Prediction
Sevilla is among the favorites to win the UEL title thanks to a +550 price. Only Barcelona and RB Leipzig are in front of them.
I think Los Blanquirrojos will prove they deserve to be atop the list by taking a one-goal advantage over West Ham. That’s right, it won’t be easy, but the Hammers are going through a bit of a rough patch. That’s why scores and odds haven’t been on their side lately. That’s also why I don’t think they’ll pull off the upset because they aren’t mentally prepared.
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2, West Ham 1
