Last season, Burnley was the third relegated team in the English Premier League, finishing five points behind Southampton and only three behind Leeds United. Last week, Southampton opened the new campaign on the road and suffered a humiliating loss. On the other hand, Leeds had no trouble protecting its home turf.
Considering both the host Saints and Peacocks remain among the favorites to finish in the relegation zone, and last weekend’s results, Saturday’s matchup is crucial despite only being Matchday 2. The soccer odds are on Southampton’s side, but so is the pressure.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting Southampton to defeat Tottenham on the road, but I didn’t expect them to lose 4-1, either. They went ahead on a goal scored by James Ward-Prowse only 12 minutes into the game, but the Spurs didn’t take long to respond and 19 minutes later, they were up 2-1.
“Playing against a Champions League team, we know the level they’re capable of playing and we took a lot of confidence into the game obviously having performed well here last year, but when we don’t play well for the whole 90 minutes of the game these teams punish you,” said Ward-Prowse in the post-match interview.
Luckily for him and his teammates, Leeds United isn’t a Champions League team. Plus, Ward-Prowse opening the season with a goal should give them hope. He finished the 2021-22 campaign as the team’s top scorer with 11 goals. Such a start means he’s hungry for more.
There’s also the fact that, last season, they obtained much better results when playing at home. They finished with a 6-7-6 record (3-6-10 on the road). They also scored three more goals and allowed 19 less, overall when playing at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Saints are offering a +125 price in the sportsbook to win straight up. As I always say, a home team offering a plus price will always be a tempting deal, especially when that team is bound to bounce back.
Leeds United: Trusting in Marsch
In 2015, Jesse Marsch was named MLS Coach of the Year. Seven years later, he’s coaching in the EPL. Last season, he replaced Marcelo Bielsa with 12 games to go, finishing with a 4-3-5 record.
This season, Marsch led the Peacocks to a great start. They played host to Wolverhampton and came from behind to win 2-1. Daniel Podence scored the opener only six minutes into the game, while Rodrigo Moreno scored the equalizer 18 minutes later. The winning goal, an own goal scored by Rayan Ait-Nouri, came in the second half.
“What I was so pleased about today was that the guys that came off the bench made a difference for us. We got a lot of good performances, we’ve to keep that mentality going forward,” explained Marsch after the match.
If the Saints have Ward-Prowse, the Peacocks have Jack Harrison, who last season finished as the team’s top scorer with 10 goals. Patrick Bamford is back from a long-term injury, but Harrison remains the main reason for you to consider including them in your soccer picks.
The Peacocks, who are offering a +215 price, haven’t finished with the signings, either. Most recently, they acquired goalkeeper Joel Robles, who’s 32 years old. He joined the team on a free transfer after his contract with Real Betis (La Liga) expired. When it comes to being successful during a long season, depth and experience can make a huge difference.

Southampton vs Leeds United Prediction
This is a crucial match and a close battle s expected. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean there will be no goals. In fact, I expect both to score, but I also expect the total to be less than 2½ goals, which is offering a +115 price. Keep in mind that the total went under in seven of their last 10 meetings. I also expect the game to finish with a draw, which is offering a more tempting price. That’s why I recommend you include the draw at +260 in your betting online ticket.
Score Prediction: Southampton 1, Leeds United 1
