Sporting KC and the Portland Timbers already met this season. Portland defeated KC 2-1 in late June on goals by Dairon Asprilla and Marvin Loria. Sporting scored first thanks to Jaylin Lindsey, but they couldn’t keep the upper hand.
Portland owns a 4-4-2 record in their last 10 meetings with Kansas City. Curiously enough, KC finished with a clean sheet in four of those games, one more than Portland. Also, the total went over six times.
Kansas City hasn’t beat Portland since 2018, a span of five matches.
Why Bet on Sporting KC?
Sporting KC deserves to be the sports betting favorite here. They won eight of their last 10 games, which allowed them to climb to first place in the Western Conference. They have 37 points on an 11-4-4 record, one more point than Seattle and two more than Los Angeles.
Most recently, they took revenge on FC Dallas by beating them 2-0. Dallas was one of the teams that managed to beat them. Alan Pulido and Daniel Salloi were the scorers while goalkeeper Tim Melia claimed his second straight shutout.
“There’s a lot of good teams in this league and we’re just trying to compete with them. I appreciate the effort of the guys. I appreciate the mentality. I’m very, very happy with the guys and happy for them and proud of them because I know that they want it,” said manager Peter Vermes after beating Dallas.
Offensively, no other team in the Western Conference has scored more goals than KC (35). Daniel Salloi is the team’s top scorer with 11. Defensively, they own the third-best record after allowing 20 goals in 19 games.
Beating KC at Children’s Mercy Park is almost impossible. They own a 5-3-1 record when playing at home, 5-4 against the spread and 3-4-2 over/under.
Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, Jaylin Lindsey, and Khiry Shelton are questionable due to injury. Their expected lineup is Tim Melia; Graham Zusi, Llie Sanchez, Andreu Fontas, Luis Martins; Roger Espinoza, Gianluca Busio, Remi Walter; Johnny Russell, Daniel Salloi, Alan Pulido.
Why Bet on the Timbers?
It’s hard to make a compelling case for a team that just lost 6-2. Nevertheless, I believe the Portland Timbers are way better than that. After all, anyone can have a bad day, right?
Portland sits in seventh place with 23 points with a 7-2-9 record. They could fall to 10th by falling to Sporting KC, which is why losing again isn’t an option. Portland played very well in the first half vs Seattle, but the second half was a debacle.
“We played very well. Then you say, how can you play so well when you lose 6-2? That’s the thinking. How can we allow so many goals in a game we started so well? That’s something we now have to make sure we analyze,” said manager Giovanni Savarese after the game.
Savarese needs to focus on defense. Portland owns the worst defensive record in the conference after allowing 35 goals in 18 games. That’s second worst in the whole league. Offensively, Sebastian Blanco is back, so not everything is bad news.
The Timbers are 1-1-6 when playing on the road and now they’ll play with a lot more pressure. They also are 2-5-1 against the spread and 4-2-2 over/under when playing away from home.
No major injuries to report here. Their expected lineup is Aljaz Ivacic; Josecarlos Van Rankin, Bill Tuiloma, Dario Zuparic, Claudio Bravo; Diego Chara, Marvin Loria, Cristhian Paredes; Yimmi Chara, Dairon Asprilla; Sebastian Blanco.
Final Analysis, Predictions
The top scoring team in the conference is facing the worst defensive team in the conference. Sporting KC plays even better at home and the Portland Timbers will be under tremendous pressure. Nevertheless, Portland hasn’t lost to KC in their last five meetings, giving them some much needed confidence. Their last two games at Children’s Mercy Park finished 2-2 and 3-2.
I expect Savarese to make changes, tactically, and a close, thrilling game. Both will score. Don’t forget to check the Soccer Props to increase your winning chances. Take a shot on the correct score, half time/full time winner, and more.
Score Prediction: Sporting KC 2, Portland Timbers 2
