Sporting: Winless against Marseille

The Portuguese squad is on a run of three home wins across all competitions and will be looking to keep the ball rolling. Surprisingly, they got destroyed by Marseille last week, losing 4-1 on the road, but they played more than 70 minutes with a man down after keeper Antonio Adan was red-carded.

Sporting has now picked five wins, one draw and three losses in their nine domestic league games, earning 16 points and sitting fifth in the Portuguese league, level on points with sixth-placed Boavista. They are leading the Group D standings with six points and a win against Marseille will earn them a place in the knockout stages.

Sporting aims to retain first place in Group D, but this game will be anything but a walk in the park. With Adan suspended for this clash, Uruguayan international Franco Israel will come into the fold for just his second appearance since his summer move from Juventus. They will be unable to call upon the services of Daniel Braganca and Neto, who are currently recuperating from knee injuries, while Jovane Cabral has been sidelined since June with a thigh problem.

Sporting is struggling at the back so if you’re betting online, you should avoid betting on them. At the same time, they are averaging two goals scored per game this season.

Marseille: Inconsistent

Last week’s victory was Marseille’s first of the UCL campaign after losing their opening two games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham. Despite the win, they sit rock-bottom in the group with three points from a possible nine. However, they could rise as high as second with all three points on Wednesday.

Marseille heads into the midweek clash off a 2-1 defeat to Ajaccio in the French Ligue 1, where they are sitting third in the standings. Marseille is a classic all-in team, which plays with a fast pace and pays little attention to their defensive line, so it’s no wonder that Igor Tudor’s team managed to keep just one clean sheet in their previous seven games.

Sead Kolasinac sustained an injury during September’s international break and the former Arsenal defender will be out for this clash. French international Jonathan Clauss was forced off with a muscle injury midway through the first half in last week’s game against Sporting, while Matteo Guendouzi is rated as doubtful after missing the game against Ajaccio at the weekend. Given their important injury issues, we won’t add Marseille to our soccer picks and parlays.

Sporting vs Marseille Head-to-Head

It will be the fourth meeting between these teams, but it should be noted that Sporting are still looking for their first triumph over Marseille. Sporting has struggled with a lack of defensive solidity this season, especially of late, as they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last four, conceding an incredible nine goals in that time. Marseille heads into Wednesday unbeaten in five of their last six away games across competitions, claiming two draws and losing twice since July.

Sporting vs Marseille Betting Lines

Sporting vs Marseille Prediction

The hosts enter this clash as slight favorites being priced at +125 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

While Marseille will be looking to boost their hopes of a place in the knockout stages with a double win against Sporting, the hosts are rock-solid in front of their fans. This game could go either way so we will avoid the moneyline. We expect a high-scoring affair between the two sides with a positive approach, with both struggling to keep clean sheets. There have been goals at both in three out of the last four fixtures for Marseille. The Portuguese team has found the back of the net in eight consecutive competitive games.
