Sweden’s One Victory from Group E Win

Poland, Lewandowski stand in path

Prior to the start of the Euro 2020 tournament, many ruled out Sweden due to Zlatan Ibrahimović’s absence. Now, Sweden is one victory away from winning Group E above mighty Spain. They need to beat Poland, which is led by Robert Lewandowski, considered the most lethal striker in the world.

Poland still has a chance, but they need to win and wait for other results. Let’s take a look at the latest team and player news, stats, injury reports and the Euro 2020 Odds for Spain vs Slovakia while making some predictions.

Head to Head

Sweden won last five meetings with Poland. The last time they met was in 2004, Sweden won 3-1.

Poland defeated Sweden for the last time in 1991. Also, they won their only meeting at a final tournament, beating Sweden 1-0 in the second Group Stage of the 1974 World Cup in Germany.

Sweden won the last four official matchups, finishing with a clean sheet in all of them.

Why Bet on Sweden?

Sweden debuted with a goalless draw against Spain. They showed an outstanding defensive tenacity and they did it again in the 1-0 victory over Slovakia. Sweden’s one of three teams that haven’t conceded any goals. Italy and England being the other two.

“It’s good to have four points after two games. We’ve played seven games this year and conceded just one goal. Our attack deserved more today; they were fantastic at times,” said head coach Janne Andersson after beating Slovakia.

Sweden’s attack includes Alexander Isak, named Player of the Game against Slovakia, and Marcus Berg. Emil Forsberg, who plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, has become their best ally. He scored Sweden’s only goal in the tournament.

Including the qualifiers, Sweden’s 7-4-1 overall, 3-2-1 when playing away from home. They also are 5-1 against the spread and 4-2 over/under. Expect Sweden to be more aggressive than their previous two games. They know they’re on the verge of advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2004. All they need is a draw.

Sweden won their only previous match at the Saint Petersburg Stadium. They defeated Switzerland 1-0 in the 2018 World Cup.

Their expected lineup is Robin Olsen, Mikael Lustig, Victor Lindelof, Marcus Danielson, Ludwig Augustinsson, Sebastian Larsson, Kristoffer Olsson, Albin Ekdal, Emil Forsberg, Marcus Berg and Alexander Isak.

Why Bet on Poland?

Lewandowski should be enough reason to consider Poland as your sports betting pick. He scored Poland’s goal against Spain. That draw kept them alive and now they need a victory to advance to the Round of 16.

“I think that in the first game we wanted to play pure football and create a lot. We focused on that and other parts did not work. We knew that against Spain we would be more focused on defense, but we did it quite well. It simply worked out,” said Lewandowski.

Defensively, Poland has conceded three goals. They need another great defensive performance against Sweden. They will also need to create a lot. Sweden can settle for a draw, Poland can’t.

Poland owns an 8-2-2 record, 4-1-1 when playing on the road. They also are 5-1 against the spread and 1-3-2 over/under. Expect Poland to attack from the start. Of course, Lewandowski will be the center of attention, Karol Swiderski could take advantage of that.

Grzegorz Krychowiak is out due to suspension. He saw a red card during the game against Slovakia.

I don’t expect any changes on their starting lineup. Wojciech Szczesny in goal, Bartosz Bereszynski, Kamil Glik, Jan Bednarek, Kamil Jozwiak in defense, Jakub Moder, Maciej Rybus, Mateusz Klich, Karol Linetty in the midfield, Karol Swiderski and Robert Lewandowski in front.

Final Analysis, Predictions

Against all odds, both have chances of advancing, but the pressure will be on Poland’s shoulders. Despite showing some improvement against Spain, Poland will need their very best to break Sweden’s defensive wall. I expect Lewandowski to shine again.

Our 2-1 prediction favoring Poland is offering a +1000 price. If you’re thinking about going with Sweden, a 2-1 victory is +800.

Score Prediction: Poland 2, Sweden 1
