Semifinal Upset Winners
This is it, folks. Toluca and Pachuca will collide in a two-game series with the Liga MX Torneo de Apertura 2022 title on the line. Toluca finished the regular season in sixth place while Pachuca finished fourth. That’s the main reason for Los Tuzos to be the soccer betting favorites for the first leg despite playing on the road.
The thing is, Los Diablos Rojos eliminated America, the heavy favorites to win the title, meaning they’re highly motivated and ready to keep it going!
Toluca: Sanvezzo Leading the Way
During the regular season, Toluca scored 27 goals. Camilo Sanvezzo finished as the team’s top scorer with nine of those goals. The good news for Los Diablos Rojos is that the Brazilian/Mexican striker has kept the rhythm in the postseason.
Toluca faced Juarez in a sudden-death match with a ticket for the Round of 8 on the line and won 3-0. Sanvezzo scored the opener. Later, they eliminated Santos Laguna by a 6-4 aggregate. Sanvezzo scored a brace in the first leg. Most recently, they eliminated America with a 3-2 aggregate. He didn’t score but was crucial in keeping Las Aguilas’ defense busy.
Defensively, Los Diablos Rojos did a great job containing the best-attacking unit in the tournament. Prior to facing Toluca, Las Aguilas were averaging 2.5 goals. The first leg at Nemesio Diez finished 2-1 while the second at Estadio Azteca ended 1-1.
Considering all of the above, I think it’s fair to say that Toluca are a very tempting underdog to include in your soccer picks, especially at +200. Plus, they only lost one of their last 10 games at home.
Pachuca: Perfect Balance
So, if Toluca have Sanvezzo, Pachuca have Nicolas Ibanez, who finished the regular season as the league’s top scorer with 14 goals. He alone scored almost as many goals as Atletico San Luis (15).
As if that wasn’t enough, Los Tuzos finished with the third-best defensive unit after allowing 15 goals. Only Monterrey (13) and Tigres (14) allowed fewer.
That balance helped them to defeat Tigres in the Round of 8. The series finished 2-2, but finishing the regular season in a better position than Tigres allowed Pachuca to advance. Later, in the semifinals, they had no mercy on Monterrey, crushing them by a 6-2 aggregate. Ibanez scored a hat trick in the first leg.
Los Tuzos come in as the betting online favorites. They’re offering a +130 price, meaning you could win $130 per every $100 wagered on them. Los Tuzos are 2-1-2 in their last five games on the road. They scored in three of those games and finished with a clean sheet twice.

Here’s another reason for Pachuca to be in control of the Las Vegas odds for the first leg: Los Tuzos won the only meeting in the regular season 4-1. The game, which was also held in Toluca, was a card fest. The referee ended up showing 10 yellow cards in total and one red. As for the scorers, Illian Hernandez led the way with a brace while Paulinho de la Fuente and Nicolas Ibanez helped seal the deal.
Los Tuzos won the last three meetings between the two at Nemesio Diez, but Los Diablos Rojos won the last time they met at Estadio Hidalgo.

Toluca vs Pachuca Prediction
I understand that Liga MX may not sound very attractive to some but, trust me, if you like exhilarating matches, celebrate goals and even a bit of controversy, it is a great option. Plus, we’re talking about two well-balanced teams that are eager to regain the throne.
Toluca won the title for the last time in 2010 while Pachuca won it in 2016. That being said, you can expect a back-and-forth battle on Thursday, in which the total will go over and neither will win. Ibanez and Sanvezzo will shine.
Score Prediction: Toluca 2, Pachuca 2
