Tottenham to End Losing Streak vs Villa

Tottenham will attempt to avoid a four-game Premier League skid as it plays host to Aston Villa. A tough Villa side won at Old Trafford for the first time since 2009 and can pick up a second straight road win vs a “big six” team.

The soccer odds favor Tottenham, despite its losing streak, but at longer than even odds.

Head to Head

Last season, the away team won both matches. With fans back in full stadiums, that’ll be a tough task to repeat.

Tottenham has won eight of its last ten matches vs Aston Villa and three of four since Villa returned to the Premier League a couple of seasons ago.

Tottenham Went From 1st to 11th in a Few Weeks

Three weeks into the season, Tottenham fans took delight in the fact that their club was first and rival Arsenal was last. Spurs had won three straight matches by a 1-0 scoreline to open up Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure as manager.

Just three weeks later, Arsenal comfortably defeated Tottenham in the North London Derby, 3-1 for three consecutive wins of its own. It was Tottenham’s third loss in a row and it saw the Gunners leapfrog Spurs in the table in embarrassing fashion.

Tottenham has been a trainwreck defensively, conceding three goals in three straight Premier League matches and needs to get back on track. Spurs have also struggled to score goals, finding the back of the net just four times in six matches. Spurs have been one of the most erratic soccer picks of the early season.

Harry Kane, back after a long drawn out Summer transfer saga, has failed to score in five premier league matches and Heung Min Son has three of Tottenham’s four Premier League goals.

Kane did score a hat trick in Tottenham’s 5-1 Conference League win over Mura after coming on as a 59th minute substitute. The victory ended a five game winless streak in all competitions and could be a confidence boost for Kane and Tottenham heading into the weekend.

Villa Coming off Iconic Win

Aston Villa proved most people betting online, including myself, comically wrong last weekend with its away win vs Manchester United. It was just the fourth time in 53 tries in the Premier League era that Villa has beaten United and second time at Old Trafford.

Kourtney Hause, who was filling in for injured defender Axel Tuanzebe, scored an 88th minute header to put Villa in front. Minutes later, he was called for a handball in the box which gave United a golden opportunity to tie the match. Maybe keeper Emi Martinez’s intimidation tactics worked, but Villa was fortunate that Bruno Fernandes skied his penalty over the bar.

The whistle blew moments later and Aston Villa secured an iconic win at Old Trafford. After suffering a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, Villa has responded with two consecutive shutout wins and looks like it’ll be just fine following Jack Grealish’s Summer move to Manchester City.

The Birmingham club is in eighth place through six matches following an 11th place finish in 2020-21. Striker Ollie Watkins led the team with 14 Premier League goals last season but hasn’t scored yet. Striker Danny Ings, Winger Leon Bailey and attacking midfielder Emi Buendia are exciting attacking-minded signings that could propel Villa to a top half finish this season.

Prediction

Tottenham has conceded a goal in six straight matches in all competitions and needs to sort itself out as pressure builds on Nuno.

Spurs came out last weekend vs Arsenal lacking energy and attacking impetus and should be motivated after an embarrassing derby day defeat.

Going into the international break with four consecutive losses would be demoralizing and I think Spurs will pull off a win here to avoid that unenviable fate.

Pick: Tottenham (+115)
