Winner Guaranteed Intercontinental Playoff Spot

Qualification on Line in Uruguay vs Peru

It simply doesn’t get much better than this as Uruguay and Peru duke it out for a potential spot in Qatar 2022. The winner of this match is, at the very least, guaranteed to at least make the intercontinental playoff where they would most likely face Australia. Expect a hostile atmosphere at the Estadio Centenario for one of host Uruguay’s biggest games in recent memory. La Celeste are clear soccer betting favorites in Thursday night’s matchup.

Let’s check the latest news, stats, injury reports, and CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers for Uruguay vs Peru. We’ve plenty of predictions for you to consider.

Uruguay Sitting in Fourth

Uruguay began to rescue their lackluster WCQ campaign a couple months back with consecutive wins vs. Paraguay and Venezuela. In the 4-1 win vs. Venezuela in February, Uruguay managed more than one goal for the first time since September. Uruguay moved up to fourth with the two wins and are in the last automatic qualifying spot with two games remaining. They also broke a five-game ATS losing streak with two covers vs. Paraguay and Venezuela.

With a win, Uruguay would be guaranteed to finish above Peru and at least make the intercontinental playoff spot in fifth. La Celeste’s two matches this international break are highly consequential as their final group match is against sixth-place Chile, who can still catch them with two wins. Uruguay’s squad includes mainstays like forwards Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, defender Diego Godin and keeper Fernando Muslera.

Peru Needs Three Points

Peru have picked things up lately and are on a four-game unbeaten run in qualifiers. They’ve been one of the better recent soccer picks and should be favored to finish fifth as they have a winnable match vs. Paraguay to close out CONMEBOL qualifiers. Peru are 4-1 ATS in their last five qualifying matches and could guarantee making at least the intercontinental playoff with a win here.

D.C. United midfielder Edison Flores has scored some big goals lately as he got the equalizer in the 1-1 draw vs. Ecuador in February and scored the winner vs. Colombia in late January. Gianluca Lapadula is the main man up front, but he’s scored just five goals for La Blanquirroja in 18 career appearances. Peru have been very streaky as they’ve scored in four consecutive matches, but were shut out in the previous four matches.

Uruguay vs Peru Head-to-Head

In a pick’em, Uruguay and Peru tied 1-1 back in September in the reverse fixture. Uruguay have won just one of the last five meetings but have won each of the last four played in Montevideo.

This has not been a high-scoring fixture in recent meetings and the under has been a good pick to bet online recently. Five of the last six meetings have finished with two goals or fewer. Uruguay has a distinct edge in the all-time series with 38 wins, 17 losses and 15 draws.

Uruguay vs Peru Prediction

Uruguay have players who have been in high-pressure situations, won Champions League finals and played in multiple World Cups. Peru has a bit more inexperience in that domain but they did manage to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Looking at Uruguay’s roster, you’d think one of Cavani or Suarez would show up in a big way in what’s very likely their last chance to qualify for a World Cup. Neither Suarez nor Cavani were available when these teams last met, but they could make the difference here. Benfica forward Darwin Nunez could be another X-factor in the match. La Celeste’s midfield is also strong with high-level players like Fede Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Matias Vecino and Lucas Torreira.

Looking at the totals, two seems to be about right as the last two meetings have finished in a 1-1 draw. Peru are massive moneyline underdogs at +550 in the sportsbook and they haven’t won in Uruguay since 2004. A draw, which wouldn’t at all be a bad outcome for either team especially if Chile loses to Brazil, is listed at +240.

The standout pick seems to me to be Uruguay at -155. This is a match that they should win at home and I’d take them up to -170 here. Expect Suarez and Co. to get another shot at World Cup glory come November.

Pick: Uruguay (-155)
