USA and Mexico last met in June for the CONCACAF Nations League Final. USA won a thrilling match in overtime (3-2) thanks to Christian Pulisic, who scored a penalty kick. From that game, Pulisic, Sergino Dest, Gio Reyna and Weston McKennie are not on USA’s Gold Cup squad. Mexico is missing Guillermo Ochoa, Diego Lainez, Andres Guardado and Hirving Lozano.
Regarding the Gold Cup, they’ve met seven times, six in the Grand Finale. Mexico leads the tournament series 5-0-2, winning the last three times they met with a 10-2 aggregate.
Why Bet on USA?
Team USA has been feeling very comfortable playing at home, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t suffered a bit.
They had no problem winning Group B with a perfect 3-0-0 record, eight goals for and one against. Nevertheless, the Round of 8 and the semifinals proved to be a much tougher challenge. They won both games against Jamaica and Qatar 1-0 with a late goal.
Offensively, their best match was a 6-1 victory over Martinique. Gyasi Zardes and Daryl Dike lead the team in scoring with two goals. Curiously enough, Zardes hasn’t been a starter in all games.
“It’s a team effort. Our starters did a phenomenal job of wearing them out … so when the subs came in, we were able to make a difference,” said Zardes after beating Qatar.
Defensively, goalkeeper Matt Turner has proven worthy of playing in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. He and Miles Robinson have played every minute at the Gold Cup.
After beating Qatar, the team is 25-6-3 under head coach Gregg Berhalter. He has reached 25 victories faster than any other U.S. coach. That definitely will boost everybody’s confidence prior to the Grand Finale.
Their expected lineup is Matt Turner; Shaquell Moore, James Sands, Miles Robinson, Sam Vines; Gianluca Busio, Kellyn Acosta, Sebastian Lletget; Daryl Dike, Gyasi Zardes, Matthew Hoppe.
Why Bet on Mexico?
I’m not sure Mexico deserves to be the sports betting favorite here, but as the reigning champions they deserve respect. Don’t get me wrong, of course. Mexico’s a great team, but they’ve suffered more than a bit.
They won Group A with a 2-1-0 record, four goals for and zero against. Most recently, they defeated Honduras 3-0 and Canada 2-1. Their semifinal victory came on a very late goal (99 minutes) from midfielder Hector Herrera. During a big portion of the game, Canada was the better team.
Despite not having several key players, Mexico has found ways of scoring. Orbelin Pineda and Rogelio Funes Mori lead the team with three goals each. Defensively, goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera has been great.
Head coach Gerardo Martino has plenty of experience, more than Berhalter. The team’s 27-5-3 with him in charge. He led them to the title in 2019, so they know how to face this kind of match.
Hirving Lozano remains out due to injury. Their expected lineup is Alfredo Talavera; Luis Rodriguez, Nestor Araujo, Hector Moreno, Jesus Gallardo; Hector Herrera, Jonathan dos Santos, Edson Alvarez; Orbelin Pineda; Rogelio Funes Mori, Jesus Corona.
Final Analysis, Predictions
You can expect a showdown. Not only will there be a tile at stake, but it’s also a historic rivalry. You can also expect goals. Four of their previous seven Gold Cup meetings went over two goals. Remember, the teams have never drawn.
No team has been able to win two Gold Cup titles in a row since 2011. I think that’s not going to change. Yes, USA has a younger team, but they’re eager to prove they belong. USA’s quickness when attacking will be a problem for Mexico’s center backs. They’ve nothing to lose and the pressure will be on Mexico’s shoulders.
