Wales: Riding High

Rob Page guided the Dragons to their first World Cup in 64 years with a 1-0 victory over Ukraine on Sunday. There was certainly an air of controversy surrounding their victory but a win is a win and Wales was drawn into a group with England, the United States and Iran, giving them a good chance to qualify for the knockout stages.

They still have three Nations League fixtures to navigate during a tough one-week period. Wales spent two years vying for promotion in League A before earning their spot, with the defeat to Poland representing their only loss in 11 fixtures across all competitions. They transformed their home turf into a real fortress, being a tough team to beat when playing in front of their fans.

They are now undefeated in 19 fixtures in a row in front of their own fans since losing to Denmark in the inaugural Nations League campaign. Wales would be forgiven for entering this game with a proverbial hangover, so if you’re betting online you should avoid backing them.

The hosts have been on a persistent run of goal-scoring form, finding the back of the net in each of their last six fixtures. Wales have a solid squad but could be caught off guard after what Gareth Bale described as the greatest moment in the history of the country. Page is expected to make wholesale changes in the starting lineup as he prepares for three more games in the space of six days.

Netherlands: Scoring Goals for Fun

The Netherlands produced a superb attacking display to humble Belgium, one of the best teams in the world, with Memphis Depay scoring a brace in the 4-1 win. They are undefeated since that disappointing last-16 exit to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020, winning seven and drawing three across all competitions since.

The Netherlands have a fully fit squad at their disposal and will need to name their best starting lineup for this fixture. Liverpool rock-solid defender Virgil van Dijk has been given a break from football and will not be available for selection.

The Netherlands scored 30 goals in their previous six games across all competitions, having an attacking approach in every game. They will definitely play using the same style, but we’re also expecting manager Louis van Gaal to work with a nearly full complement of players for Wednesday’s clash. It would not be surprising to see the visitors line up with an altered squad against Wales.

Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt are both set to return on defense line as van Dijk goes on holiday, while Tyrell Malacia may earn just his fourth cap if veteran Daley Blind is given some time off. The Netherlands are two classes above their opponents and we will include them in our soccer picks and parlays.

Wales vs Netherlands Head-to-Head

The Netherlands have won their last eight mutual encounters between the two sides. Both teams have contributed on the scoresheet in the last three head-to-heads held in Cardiff. Four of Wales’ last five home fixtures across all competitions saw them concede at least once. Both of the Netherlands’ wins during 2022 saw both teams score. The visitors have scored at least twice in each of their last seven contests against Wales.

The Netherlands have lost only twice in 10 UNL group stages, with neither of them being against sides outside FIFA’s top 10. Five of Wales’ last six international matches have ended with both teams getting on the scoreboard while four of the Netherlands’ last five fixtures have produced goals at both ends of the pitch.

Wales vs Netherlands Predictions

The visitors enter this clash as heavy favorites at -190 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

Ranked one place higher than Denmark, the Netherlands head into this clash as firm favorites to capitalize on any potential Welsh hangover. The 4-1 win against Belgium will give them huge confidence and, on top of that, they are by far the better side between the two. Ukraine had nine shots on target against Wales but failed to convert them into goals.

The Netherlands have too much quality going forward and they don’t need so many opportunities to find the back of the net. In terms of goals, we expect a high-scoring affair with the visitors having the necessary weapons to cover that on their own.
