Weekend Parlay: Brest, Sporting Top Picks

Since returning to France’s top-flight in 2019-20, Stade Brestois 29 have emerged as a comfortable mid-table side. But, when Eric Roy took charge in January 2023, they found themselves in grave danger of going down, having taken 13 points from their first 17 matches. Roy, whose sole managerial job up until that point had seen him coach OGC Nice from March 2010 to November 2011, managed to stave off the drop with Brest finishing 14th, nine clear of the drop. Today, he has Brest dreaming of a first-ever European qualification.

If you’re planning to bet on French soccer this weekend, bet on Brest picking up a third straight win against Le Havre on Sunday. Despite losing their best player, Franck Honorat, to Gladbach for €8 million and spending a total of €3.5 million in the summer window (with the vast majority of their signings being loan moves or free transfers), Brest have caught Ligue 1 bettors by surprise this season. Les Pirates currently occupy second place, 11 points behind PSG, two above Monaco and three above Nice.

Only Nice (15) have conceded fewer goals than Brest (18) this season, and they’re a strong bet to come away with their third straight clean sheet as they host Le Havre, who are playing in Ligue 1 for the first time in 14 years and who sit 14th in the table, two points above the relegation playoff spot.

Apart from a 3-1 win against a Lyon side that went down to 10 men within a half-hour and finished the match with nine players, Le Havre have taken just two points from their last six. After kicking off February with a 1-1 draw at Monaco, Le Havre were sent packing from the Coupe de France with a 3-1 loss at Strasbourg before succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Rennes, a 3-0 defeat at Lille and a 2-1 loss to Reims, who played the final half-hour with 10 men.

Brest, meanwhile, have not lost in Ligue 1 since Nov. 15, and there’s more than enough reason to back them to claim their 13th league win of the season in your soccer betting picks. At -160, the odds are in the Pirates’ favor as they look to subject Le Havre to a fourth straight defeat.

Primeira Liga Betting: Goals Galore for Sporting

Sporting began 2024 with a 5-1 win against Estoril Praia, a statement win and a sign of things to come. Since then, they’ve scored three goals against Young Boys and Leiria, four against Tondela, five against Vizela and Braga, and eight against Casa Pia.

Ruben Amorim’s side dropped points for the first time since Dec. 9, with Sebastian Coates’ 73rd-minute equalizer salvaging a 3-3 draw at Rio Ave. Apart from their draw in Vila de Conde and a 1-1 stalemate vs. Young Boys that saw them secure a comfortable 4-2 aggregate victory, Sporting have won 14 of their last 15 matches, and the odds are in their favor as they look to continue their red-hot form against newly promoted Farense.

The last time these two sides met in the league, Farense fell to 10 men in the 18th minute, but the Algarvians managed to erase a two-goal deficit via Mattheus Oliveira’s brace. And yet, Sporting would have the last laugh with Viktor Gyokeres converting his second penalty in the 90th minute to snatch a 3-2 win in Faro. One month later, Mattheus would cut Sporting’s lead in half, but Gyokeres would complete his hat trick in the 63rd minute in a 4-2 win in the Taca da Liga.

Sporting will not have to worry about Mattheus on Sunday, with the Brazilian seeing red in the first half of their 1-0 defeat to Moreirense, but Farense will have to worry about Gyokeres. The Swedish striker continued his stellar form on Thursday, leaving Nicolas Otamendi in his wake and doubling Sporting’s lead, with the Lions prevailing with a 2-1 win against Benfica in the first leg of the Taca de Portugal semifinals.

Gyokeres has racked up 31 goals and 11 assists in 34 appearances, and he’s yet another reason why we’re backing Sporting to come away with a high-scoring win in our Primeira Liga betting picks.
