¡Vamos Ecuador! Can They Lift Their First Copa America Trophy?

Brazil, Argentina, or Uruguay have won 39 of the 47 Copa America titles, and it seems likely that one of those three South American giants will come away with the trophy again. Paraguay, Peru, and Chile have also won two apiece, while Bolivia and Colombia have won one each. It begs the question – is any team capable of winning the trophy for the first time in 2024?

Mexico, the United States, Panama, Jamaica, Canada, and Costa Rica are all looking to become the first CONCACAF nation to win the Copa, while Venezuela and Ecuador are also vying for their first title.

Out of those options, Ecuador seems to be the strongest bet to end their drought – with Enner Valencia and Alexander Dominguez offering vital experience, there is a solid platform to build on their exciting young talent. Moises Caicedo has emerged as one of the Premier League’s finest midfield destroyers at 22, and his future Chelsea teammate Kendry Paez is primed for a breakout tournament at the tender age of 17. In addition, Ecuador has a formidable backline that could prove resilient and efficient and lay the groundwork for a successful tournament.

At +330, it seems highly improbable that there will be a first-time winner at the Copa America, but if there is one team that’s capable of winning their first title, Ecuador is it.

Who’s Winning the Golden Boot?

Pele, Gabriel Batistuta, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Adriano, Lionel Messi…just a handful of the players who have gotten their hands on the Golden Boot award and finished as top scorer in Copa America. Messi is the favorite to win the award in 2024 at +300 betting odds, with Argentina teammates Julian Alvarez (+600) and Lautaro Martinez (+800) also in the mix.

Brazil boasts a wide variety of world-class attacking superstars, and they pose a serious threat to get their hands on the trophy. Vinicius Junior (+400) and Rodrygo (+800) have helped to fill Karim Benzema’s void in Real Madrid’s attack, taking their performances up a notch and leading Los Blancos to the La Liga title and the Champions League title. If Brazil comes away with the title, both Vinicius and Rodrygo will have to step up and compensate for Neymar’s absence.

However, one player who could be a potential dark horse for the award is Darwin Nunez. With Edinson Cavani retiring from international football before the tournament and Luis Suarez approaching 38 years of age, it is time for a change of guard at La Celeste. Darwin’s frenetic, intense style of play should fit like a glove under Marcelo Bielsa, and at +600, he has an outside shot of winning the Golden Boot and becoming the first Uruguayan in four decades to win the top scorer award.

While he continues to divide opinion at Anfield with his inconsistent first touch and perplexing decision-making in front of goal, he has become the fourth player in the Jurgen Klopp era to hit 30+ goal contributions for Liverpool. After a disappointing end to the campaign, Darwin bagged a hat-trick to lead Uruguay to a 4-0 victory against Mexico on June 5, and with a major confidence boost and new surroundings, he could very well flourish in this summer’s tournament, making him a great option for a player prop bet for top goalscorer.
