Dortmund Streak on Line

Wolfsburg has Dropped Six Straight Against Second-Place Visitors

Two Champions League sides meet in the Bundesliga on Saturday as Wolfsburg plays host to an injury-plagued Borussia Dortmund. Both sides dropped their midweek matches and are now in need of all three points from their last UCL games.

In the meantime, Dortmund has a prime opportunity to leapfrog Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table. BVB have relished playing at the Volkswagen Arena in recent seasons and are favored by the latest soccer lines.

Wolfsburg vs Dortmund Betting Preview

Head to Head

Borussia Dortmund have been completely dominant in this fixture in the last few years and have been a great pick for betting online. They’ve won the last six meetings and are unbeaten in the last 12.

Last season, Dortmund won 2-0 both home and away as the injured Erling Haaland scored both goals at the Volkswagen Arena.

Wolfsburg Captain Out

Goalkeeper Koen Casteels tested positive for COVID-19 as German cases are rising at an alarming level. Wolfsburg’s captain missed his first game of the season at Sevilla, which ended in a 2-0 loss.

Wolfsburg is in last place in Champions League Group G but within two points of second-place RB Salzburg, with a match remaining. Die Wolfe put together two consecutive wins in the Bundesliga but found themselves down 2-0 at Arminia over the weekend at halftime. Wout Weghorst and Lukas Nmecha scored within a minute of each other to muster up a point.

When it comes to betting online, Wolfsburg hasn’t matched the heights reached last season in the Bundesliga. Die Wolfe lost just three matches at home all of last season but dropped two of their last three matches in the league. Yet, despite the recent struggles, Wolfsburg are still hovering around the top four, just two points behind third place Freiburg.

Despite Casteels’ absence, midfielder Joshua Guilavogui returned to action vs Sevilla and is expected to feature in this match as well. He’ll help protect a back line that has struggled lately. Wolfsburg kept three clean sheets in its first four Bundesliga matches but has kept just two since.

Dortmund Holding it Together Despite Midweek Loss

Like Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund was knocked out of the Champions League following a disappointing 3-1 loss to Sporting. Dortmund dominated possession but Pedro Goncalves scored a first-half brace and Pedro Porro added another in the second half for Sporting.

Donyell Malen got a late consolation goal for BVB but the loss meant the Lisbon club went clear of Dortmund for second place in Group C to advance to the knockout stage. It’s hard to fault first-year manager Marco Rose or the players too much as there just hasn’t been much continuity.

The squad is currently decimated by injuries as Haaland, Gio Reyna and a host of bit-part players are out. Winger Thorgan Hazard recently tested positive for COVID-19, despite the whole team being vaccinated.

Dortmund certainly relies on Haaland and is reportedly willing to double his wages to entice the injured star to stay in Germany. Until he’s back, the team won’t be the same offensively. It has, however, been good to see Malen get on the scoresheet in consecutive matches after early-season struggles.

Somehow despite all of the issues staying healthy, Dortmund is just one point behind Bayern Munich and has been one of the best soccer picks in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg vs Dortmund Prediction

Neither club is close to full strength, especially Borussia Dortmund. Yet the sportsbook still implies that Dortmund has a better chance to win, at +140 to Wolfsburg’s +190 odds.

I think that losing a starting goalkeeper, especially when he’s your captain, can be an overlooked loss. Without a familiar voice to organize Wolfsburg’s backline, things can get a little dicey. I’m not sure if Dortmund will extend their win streak vs Wolfsburg to seven, but I do think they’ll at least manage a result here.

Take Borussia Dortmund as a Pick’em at -135.
