England: Pressure as Favorite

With the United States out of the picture, all the pressure related to winning the title fell on England. The good news is that the Lionesses are used to the pressure. Let’s not forget that we’re talking about the reigning UEFA Women’s European champions.

Regarding the WWC, the Lionesses have been able to meet expectations, but they were almost eliminated in the Round of 16. Colombia: Dark Horse

Prior to the start of the tournament, Colombia wasn’t among the favorites to win the title. In fact, Las Cafeteras weren’t even considered a dark horse. That started to change during the group stage, in which they defeated South Korea and Germany to win Group H.

Most recently, they suffered a bit more than expected but still beat Jamaica in the Round of 16. The match finished 1-0 thanks to Maria Usme, who scored at the beginning of the first half. The defensive unit also deserves some credit since the Reggae Girlz never stopped trying.

“We want more. It’s not our ceiling, now we are thinking about England, which is going to be a dream match. … (There is) the certainty that we can achieve more in this World Cup,” said Usme during the post-match interview.

Needless to say, they’re highly motivated. Plus, unlike James, Colombia’s top player will be on the pitch. We’re talking about Linda Caicedo, who plays for Real Madrid and has scored two goals in the tournament.
