Mikey Garcia's first foray into the welterweight decision didn't go as planned. The four-division champion stepped into the ring against a pound-for-pound great in Errol Spence Jr. last March. He lost a unanimous decision in a fight he was never in.

Garcia is a former WBO and Ring featherweight champion, a WBO junior lightweight champion, a WBC and IBF lightweight champion, and an IBF junior welterweight champion. Garcia is also the lineal junior welterweight title holder since 2018.

The Spence Jr. fight was Garcia's first loss. Before that, he rattled off 39 consecutive victories, including 30 knockouts. Garcia holds wins over Robert Easter Jr., Sergey Lipinets, and Adrian Broner among others.

This time around, Garcia will be taking on Jessie Vargas. Vargas is coming off a sixth round TKO over Humberto Soto last April. This followed back-to-back draws over Thomas Dulorme (split) and Adrien Broner (majority).

Vargas has no blemishes on his record. He's 29-2-2 with his two only losses coming to greats Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao. He holds wins over Sadam Ali, Khabib Allakhverdiev, and Tony DeMarco among others.

"La Nueva Generacion" is a former WBA and IBO Super lightweight champion, as well as a former WBO welterweight champion. Vargas is also a two-time Mexican national champion, a two-time US Junior National Champion, and a 2008 Mexican Olympian.

Vargas will be the bigger fighter Saturday night. He has extensive experience fighting at welterweight or above. He'll hold a significant 5" height and 3" reach advantage.

That size difference may once again prove to be too much. Spence Jr. used his size to bully and batter Garcia. Vargas is an even bigger fighter. This, along with Garcia's inexperience at welterweight is why the oddsmakers have appointed Jessie Vargas the heavy favorite.
