Cal Poly Mustangs
Cal Poly hasn’t been great this year, to say the least. With this team not getting much production out of their key players, losses have come by the truck load. Alimamy Koroma has been incredible this year, though, averaging 12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while leading the team in each of those categories this year. His excellent partner in crime Keith Smith has been equally productive, leading the team in steals and assists with 3.6 and 1.3 per game. Smith isn’t a double-digit scorer, though, as the only other one on the team is Colby Rogers, averaging 11.1.
As a whole, this team needs to shoot far better than they have while also having some other players step up and take some pressure off of Koroma and Rogers. As a team they shoot 38 percent from the field and 30 percent from the behind the arc, numbers that do not get you wins. Their season may already be over at 3-17, but they could try and build some momentum for next year with a win over a very tough Gauchos team. Look for the Mustangs to try some things out in an attempt to give them an edge.
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos
The Gauchos have been dominant this year, putting up excellent offensive numbers all around. They are led by the senior JaQuori McLaughlin, he is averaging 15.9 points and 5.4 assists per contest, leading the team in each of those categories. Fellow senior Amadou Sow has also had a very nice year now, putting up 12.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. This team also has a third double digit scorer in Ajare Sanni.
The Gauchos are an efficient offensive team with experienced leaders to get them through any situation. It also helps when they are coming into this game with a ton of momentum despite losing their last contest. They even boast a few very talented defenders such as Devearl Ramsey, who leads the team with 1.8 steals per game and has excellent perimeter defense. If Santa Barbara is able to put their best foot forward yet again in this game, then there is no reason that they can’t win this game. The win would improve their record to a fantastic 18-4. Look for McLaughlin to try and take over if it happens to be close down the stretch.
