- Seton Hall +9.5 (-110)
Purdue (10-5) vs Ohio State (11-3)
When: Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., ET
Where: Value City Arena, Columbus, Ohio
Analysis: Ohio State finds itself inside the Top-20 following wins over Rutgers, Northwestern, and Illinois. The 87-81 win over Illinois was a quality outing, and it holds the Buckeyes in good stead against Purdue.
The Boilermakers have also been in good form after posting three consecutive wins. The wins came against Michigan State, Indiana, and Penn State, so they would have derived plenty of confidence.
However, earlier this month Purdue lost to Rutgers and Illinois – two teams Ohio State has beaten comfortably this season.
Statistically, both teams match up similarly, with the Buckeyes holding just a six-point advantage in points per game. There is little between them on the defensive end, so this game could come down to which team wants it more.
Now that Ohio State is a ranked team, it could come out firing for this game. The Buckeyes are 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference, tied with Purdue, so closing the gap on Michigan (6-1) is important.
Purdue vs Ohio State Betting Prediction
If Purdue gets hot from the 3-point line, it will be tough for Ohio State to win. However, there is more consistency with the Buckeyes.
Most of the early money has come for Ohio State, and it should get the job done with home-court advantage.
Prediction Ohio State 78, Purdue 75
Tennessee (10-1) vs Florida (6-4)
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET
Where: Exactech Arena, Gainesville, Florida
Analysis: Many bettors would look at the respective records of Tennessee and Florida, and assume the Volunteers would score an easy win. However, Florida has been an upset team this season, and it shouldn’t be overlooked.
The Florida Gators have lost three of their last four games. They average 76.7 points per game, which is typically spread throughout the team. Tre Mann leads the Gators with 14 points per game, so it’s a team-based offensive effort.
Tennessee ranks slightly better on offense with 77.2 points per game. Victor Bailey Jr is almost shooting at 50 percent, so as his confidence grows, the results will come.
The Volunteers are tough on defense, and that’s where the difference in this game could come. Tennessee gives up only 57.2 points per game, which is an incredible effort. It gave up only 54 points against Texas A&M last week, which is credit to its defensive talent.
Florida has a chance to keep this game close, and its 6-4 record doesn’t accurately reflect its ability. However, Tennessee is a Top-10 team, and it will want to show why.
The Gators could become frustrated with the lack of offensive production, which could lead to turnovers. Look for Tennessee to come out of the gates slowly, but it should pick up the intensity approaching halftime.
Prediction: Tennessee 72, Florida 62
Seton Hall (9-5) vs Villanova (8-1)
When: Tuesday, January 19, 9 p.m. ET
Where: Finneran Pavilion, Villanova
Analysis: Despite being the third-ranked team in the country, we don’t think Villanova is getting the credit it deserves. The Wildcats are 8-1 with the only loss coming to Virginia Tech in November.
Since that time, they have rattled off six consecutive wins. They have faced only two ranked teams all season (Arizona State and Texas), but Villanova put away a pesky Marquette team by 17 points last month.
Due to postponed games, the Wildcats have played only nine games, and haven’t played in 2021. That could be tough to overcome on Tuesday, against a Seton Hall team that has produced some good performances.
The Pirates have won four of their last five games, with the only loss coming to Creighton. During that stretch, quality wins came over Butler and Xavier.
They are a team that does all the little things well, such as steals and blocks. The Pirates average 6.7 steals and 4.5 blocks per game, which trumps the 3.9 steals and 1.8 blocks for Villanova.
College basketball odds suggest Villanova will be tough to handle. The line could reach double digits come game time, so Seton Hall is every chance of covering the spread.
Villanova could take time to shake off the rust, having not played since December. If Seton Hall can get steals and blocks, it can keep this game close.
Prediction: Villanova 77, Seton Hall 73
