Let’s dive into this CFP semi final matchup, Oklahoma Sooners vs LSU Tigers. 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and his LSU Tigers are headed to the Peach Bowl on December 28th to take on Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners. The Tigers finished dominated everyone in their path as they blazed their path to the CFP Semifinal while Oklahoma, led by Jalen Hurts proved why they deserve to be in the big game.
LSU holds the advantage over OU in several categories. The Tigers score 47.8 points per game and allow 21.2 points compared to OU’s 43.2 scored and 24.5 allowed. This gives LSU a +26.6 point differential to Oklahoma’s +18.7, a difference of +8.9 points for LSU.
The total yards per game for both teams is virtually identical. The difference comes in how the yardage is obtained. For LSU, it’s the passing game that reigns supreme. LSU allowed more yards per game, but fewer points. They give up 221.7 passing yards and 119.6 rushing yards compared to OU’s 198.5 passing yards and 132.1 rushing yards.
LSU came out swinging in 2019. They kicked off the season with a 55-3 win over Georgia Southern before heading to Texas to take on the 9th ranked Longhorn. Over the next three weeks they hosted Northwestern State, visited Vanderbilt, and hosted Utah State before welcoming their next ranked opponent, #7 Florida. They dominated each of those teams with spectacular quarerback play and consistent running by Clyde Edwards-Helare.
The Tigers would go on to beat Mississippi State, #9 Auburn, #3 Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. They capped off their season with a 37-10 win over #4 ranked Georgia. The win eliminated the Bulldogs from CFP talks and helped secure the top spot for thee Tigers.
Oklahoma scored 119 points against Houston and South Dakota in their first two games of the season. They followed that up with a win at UCLA, versus Texas Tech and at Kansas. #11 Texas was the first ranked opponent the Sooners faced. They won the game 34-27. OU won one more game (WVU) before losing their first and only game of the season at Kansas State.
The Sooners picked up a razor-thin win versus Iowa State the following week (42-41) before winning at #13 Baylor, versus TCU, and at Oklahoma State.
They needed overtime to beat the Baylor Bears 30-23 in the Big 12 Championship.
It should be noted that six of Oklahoma’s games — including the 48-41 loss at KSU — were decided by seven points or less.
Oklahoma Sooners vs LSU Tigers Players
LSU is home to the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Burrow. Burrow was a shoe-in for the award. In fact, he received 2,608 points to Jalen Hurts’ 762 points, making it the largest margin in the history of Heisman voting.
Burrow has passed for a whopping 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns on a record-breaking 77.9% completion. The completion percentage would be an FBS all-time record, if he keeps it up througout the College Football Playoff.
Burrow’s favorite targets have been Jamarr Chase and Justin Jefferson. Chase has caught 73 passes for 1,498 yards and 18 touchdowns. He’s averaging over 20 yards per catch. Jefferson has 88 receptions for 1,207 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Edwards-Helaire rounds out the offense with his work out of the backfield where he’s rushed for 1,290 yards and 16 touchdowns on 6.5 yards per carry.
Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, leads the Sooners on offense. He too has had a great year. Unfortunately, he happened to play at the same time as Burrow, so his accolades will be fewer.
Hurts, who was my Heisman pick in August, has passed for 3,634 yards and 32 touchdowns on 71.8% completion. He also leads the team with 1,255 yards rushing and 18 rushing touchdowns.
Kennedy Brooks, the team’s starting running back is no slouch either. He’s rushed for 976 yards and five touchdowns on 6.7 yards per carry.
Ceedee Lamb has been Hurts’ favorite target all year. Lamb has caught 58 passes for 1,208 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Oklahoma Sooners vs LSU Tigers Verdict
When we analyze this Oklahoma Sooners vs LSU Tigers game, we see there’s no stopping this LSU team. Jalen Hurts is a problem for any defense, but LSU is too well-rounded. Joe Burrow is a unique talent at quarterback who’s as money as it gets when he’s in the pocket. Defenses can’t account for accuracy like his.
You can’t ever count out Jalen Hurts, however, which is why I’m taking the points. This young man has stared adversity in the face and punch it in the face. I’ll take Hurts and 13 points any day even if they come up slightly short.
