The No. 7 Nicholls State Colonels look to stay undefeated when they visit the Northwestern State Demons on Saturday.
The FCS football season is in full swing this spring, with a Southland battle between the No. 7 Nicholls Colonels and Northwestern State on tap for Saturday. Nicholls is 2-0 this spring, while Northwestern State hasn’t played a game since November 2019.
The game kicks off on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET with Nicholls a 22½-point favorite when you go to bet online. The over-under is set at 58 points.
Nicholls: Dominant Start
Nicholls hasn’t faced much competition in its two wins this season, making college football news by winning by a combined score of 142-3. Those are video-game numbers.
The Colonels’ first win was an astounding 87-3 victory, albeit against Division II Lincoln. Their first FCS opponent was Lamar, who they beat 55-0.
The Colonels were the preseason pick to win the Southland Conference and are living up to the hype off the back of these dominant performances. The rushing offense, in particular, has had its way to start the spring season, rushing for a combined 641 yards.
Quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. has been the catalyst for much of the success, rushing for 148 yards and four touchdowns. Scott has done well through the air as well, completing 80% of his passes for 385 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. The Missouri transfer will look to continue his success and keep Nicholls near the top of the FCS rankings.
Elsewhere on offense, Nicholls’ two blowout wins have allowed it to get many players valuable playing time. Running back Julien Gums has taken 21 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Dontaze Costly has hauled in three scores.
The defense has been smothering. It’s best to not glean too much from a game against a Division II opponent, but Lamar is in the FCS, and the team shut them down too.
Lincoln mustered 110 total yards of offense against this defense, while Lamar scraped to just 91.
Northwestern State: First Game in 15 Months
This is Northwestern State’s first game since November 2019. Its season opener against Lamar was postponed due to snow in Texas, so this group hasn’t played a game for 15 months.
The Demons are coming off a 3-9 season in 2019 with big holes to fill. The team lost its starting quarterback, two running backs, star wide receiver and three offensive linemen.
That’s a lot of turnover for an offense that was already known to struggle, and the first question to be answered is who will take the reins as the starting quarterback.
The job is between junior Kaleb Fletcher and redshirt freshman Zach Clement. Head coach Brad Laird has said that both can expect to play on Saturday, so the season opener will be a rehearsal for both young men as the offense hopes to get into a rhythm.
On the bright side, Northwestern State has a handful of returning difference-makers on the defensive side of the field, a glimmer of hope of beating the college football odds in this short spring season.
Linebacker Ja’ Quay Pough and cornerback Shemar Bartholomew were both named to the All-Southland Conference preseason team and will be tasked with stopping Scott and this punishing Nicholls rushing offense.
It’s a tall task to ask the two Northwestern State quarterbacks to get in a rhythm as they split snaps against a swarming Nicholls defense that has allowed just 74 passing yards total in two games.
Factor in the long layoff for the Demons, and the arrow points completely in the direction of Nicholls for this contest. The spread is big, but the Colonels have shown they can shut offenses down and run at will.
