Potential Winning Picks
Mackenzie Hughes (+1300)
Hughes missed the cut at the U.S. Open, part of a tough stretch of play for him that ran through the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He will be returning to this event where he nailed a second-place tie last year.
That score last year was one of a pair of top-two finishes on his resume for the PGA Tour. The last one was where he had his 2016 victory at The RSM Classic.
According to Data Golf, Hughes was able to gain 2.29 strokes per round against the field last year. He steps into this week tied with Corey Conners as the second-best betting favorite right behind Will Zalatoris.
Graeme McDowell (+6000)
Looking at Graeme McDowell, he had a victory at this event at 18-under last year, which topped the likes of Hughes and Chris Stroud by a single stroke. It was McDowell’s first PGA Tour win in roughly four years, going back to the 2015 OHL Classic at Mayakoba, with another one at the 2010 U.S. Open.
McDowell’s most recent professional win was in February’s Saudi International. That particular event had featured an arguably stronger field than what is in the Dominican Republic this week.
Unfortunately, he missed the cut at two recent events; the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. However, he is still one of the best players for this event and has a great shot at defending his title for a nice price at the odds.
Kelly Kraft (+30000)
Got $10 to spare? A simple $10 bet on Kraft would return a profit of $3,000. Events like these bring out some interesting matchups and players.
Essentially, the field is wide open to whoever shows up and plays the best. The past two years have had 18-under scores to win the tournament.
Kraft is one of few players who has played this tournament each of the last two years. In that regard, he leads this group with 1.73 strokes gained per round and has been able to finish third in 2018 and tied for fifth in 2019.
