The Legend of Almond Eye
First, the legendary Almond Eye, who will leave gate two in the field of 15. This will be the final career start for the 5-year-old daughter of Lord Kanaloa,. Almond Eye has eight grade/group 1 victories, including the 2018 Japanese fillies’ Triple Crown races and that year’s Japan Cup.
“Both Contrail and Daring Tact are amazing horses, and they’ve given us some very good races,”Almond Eye’s jockey Christophe Lemaire told the Bloodhorse. “They showed us both speed and stamina. The two of them are very talented. So I think this year’s Japan Cup is going to be quite difficult. It’s very hard to tell who will win. I’ll think about my strategy two days before the race.”

Almond Eye has made three starts in 2020 with two victories and a second. Overall, she has 10 wins, a second and third in 14 career starts.
This year began with a trip to Dubai, but Almond Eye was forced to return unraced when the Meydan meet was canceled. Her first start of 2020 was the Victoria Mile on May 17, which she won with a blistering final three-furlong time of 32.9 seconds.
“I have to admit, there was a lot of pressure on us to win the eighth G1 title but she didn’t let us down,” Lemire said after her most recent victory in the Tenno Sho (Autumn). “Her performance today was awesome. The mare was relaxed at the start and we were able to break well. Then she showed a great turn of foot in the straight but ran out of steam a bit climbing the hill. The others were gaining on us but she didn’t give up.”
Contrail and Daring Tact are remarkable in their own right.
Contrail is 7-for-7 including this year’s Triple Crown for male 3-year-olds in Japan. Daring Tact is 5-for-5 and earned the fillies’ Triple Crown.
So far he has handled the best runners in Japan. He has raced seven times and won each one – four at G1, one G2 and one G3. He was rated his country’s joint-best juvenile last year
Contrail completed his sweep with a victory in the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger, G1) Oct. 25; Daring Tact is 5-for-5 and earned the fillies’ Triple Crown. Daring Tact won the final jewel in her Triple Crown in the Shuka Sho (G1) Oct. 18;
“She has developed into a bold filly, and I hope that she will remain undefeated,” jockey Kohei Matsuyama said after her victory in the Shuka Sho.
