Older horses share the spotlight with 3-year-olds as racebook betting features a menu of prime stakes races betting on Saturday.
In Florida, the Tampa Bay Derby will be run at Tampa Bay Downs. It is a Kentucky Derby prep with points on the line for the Run for the Roses and you can get in on the action at BetUS.
Tampa Bay Derby
The 12- horse field is headlined by Candy Man Rocket, who earned 10 Derby points when winning the prep for the Tampa Bay Derby, the Sam F. Davis Stakes, on Feb. 6. The Grade 2, 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby has a scheduled post time of 5:25 p.m. ET.
Tampa Bay Downs always draws a solid and deep field for its races. While the TBD may not produce a threat to win the Kentucky Derby, it always is an intriguing race.
America’s Best Racing offers some insight into Candy Man Rocket and his challengers.
Candy Man Rocket did not finish the Sam F. Davis especially fast, but he held off stablemate Nova Rags by a length and improved to 2-for-2 in his 3-year-old season following a blowout win in six-furlong maiden race at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 9. This Candy Ride colt is in the hands of a Hall of Fame trainer in Bill Mott, who is renowned for his patience and attentiveness to his horses’ needs, and he’s posted two solid workouts at Payson Park Training Center since his Sam Davis victory.
A 3-year-old that figures prominently in the Kentucky Derby picture will make a start at California’s Santa Anita Park. Of course, Life Is Good is trained by Bob Baffert, the guru of Triple Crown success.
Life Is Good faces six competitors as the San Felipe has not drawn many horses. For some reason, shorter fields are more commonplace on the West Coast. Another challenge faced by the sport.
Life Is Good has not been headed at any call in his two starts, including a gate-to-wire win in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes.
If you are looking for anyone to challenge Life Is Good, who figures be extremely short on the tote board, give a gander at Medina Spirit, another Baffert, and The Great One.
Medina Spirit is improving. He finished second to LIG in the Sham and returned with a win in the Robert B. Lewis. He’s getting better and stronger, though Medina Spirit will need to continue to step up to menace his stablemate.
The Great One, named for Wayne Gretzky, lost by a nose as a maiden to the Baffert-trained Spielberg in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. However, he returned with a 14-length win in a maiden race. That was nowhere near the test this will be. He’s taking a huge step up the class ladder.
The rest, well, are the rest.
Santa Anita Handicap
The Big ‘Cap features older horses and the star attraction is the undefeated Maxfield.
America’s Best Racing tells the tale of one of the biggest races on the Santa Anita meet for years.
This 1 ¼-mile contest was first held in 1935, when its $100,000 purse (equivalent to $1.9 million today) made it the world’s richest race.
Since then, it’s been won by some of racing’s greats, including Seabiscuit, Round Table, Ack Ack, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, John Henry, Alysheba, and Game On Dude. Three winners of the Big ’Cap have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic at year’s end: Alysheba in 1988, Tiznow in 2001, and Accelerate in 2018.
Maxfield has been interesting because of the ability he shows when he races. However, he has been sidelined multiple times due to injuries.
He is perfect while racing, and comes in off a victory in the Mineshaft at Fair Grounds on Feb. 13. He ran his eyeballs out in the victory, earning a tremendous 111 speed figure.
Can anyone tackle Maxfield if he is on his game? Give a look to Express Train and Independence Hall in the field of seven.
Express Train won the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes by 3¼ lengths. In the start prior, he finished second in the Malibu Stakes behind iCharlatan. In the summer and fall, he ran back-to-back Equibase figures of 110 at Del Mar and Santa Anita.
And to bring everything full circle and back to the Tampa Bay Derby, the 2019 winner King Guillermo is a starter in the Big ‘Cap. A 12-1 shot on the morning line would be a surprise.
Don’t forget the Gotham Stakes is also on tap at Aqueduct.
