The Preakness Stakes horses feature 10 males and one filly. She is Swiss Skydiver, who tackles the boys for the second time as a 3-year-old. Trainer Ken McPeek sent Swiss Skydiver out in the Toyota Blue Grass, where she was second to Art Collector, who is the second choice in the horse betting for this jewel of the Triple Crown.

Race Analysis
1. Excession
Jockey: Sheldon Russell
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Owner: Calumet Farm
Career record: 9 starts – 1 win – 1 second – 3 thirds
One win on career and has not raced since finishing second to Nadal at 82-1 in the Rebel in March. Would be an absolute stunner.
2. Mr. Big News
Jockey: Gabriel Saez
Trainer: Bret Calhoun
Owner: Allied Racing Stable
Career record: 8 starts – 2 wins – 1 second – 1 third
Was no match for Art Collector in the Bluegrass and no match for Authentic in the Kentucky Derby. Appears overmatched against the top two.
3. Art Collector
Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr.
Trainer: Thomas Drury Jr.
Owner: Bruce Lunsford
Career record: 9 starts – 5 wins – 1 second – 0 thirds
The likely second choice was too tough for the filly, Swiss Skydiver, in the Bluegrass. He has won five straight but had to be scratched before the Kentucky Derby due to a minor injury. He has been sharp, winning four straight — five if you ignore an open-lengths victory that turned into a DQ. Could hook up with Authentic early and often and that sets up what could turn into a match race.
4. Swiss Skydiver
Jockey: Robby Albarado
Trainer: Ken McPeek
Owner: Peter Callahan
Career record: 10 starts – 5 wins – 3 seconds – 1 third
She is a top-notch filly and it is admirable Trainer McPeek is taking another shot at the boys with Swiss Skydiver. Hard to figure her improving enough to menace the top pair but it would be a sweet story if she can become the sixth filly to win the Preakness.
5. Thousand Words
Jockey: Florent Geroux
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owners: Albaugh Family Stables and Spendthrift Farm
Career record: 7 starts – 4 wins – 1 second – 0 thirds
When last seen, he was flipping and flopping in the paddock at the Derby and left Baffert’s assistant Jimmy Barnes with a badly broken wrist. He showed the promise expect early in his career when winning the Shared Belief in last actual start. Could menace the top pair on his best (behavior)
6. Jesus’ Team
Jockey: Jevian Toledo
Trainer: Jose D’Angelo
Owner: Grupo Seven C Stable
Career record: 10 starts – 2 wins – 3 seconds – 2 thirds
No match for anyone in this field. Is the longest of shots and would take a miracle for him to win the Preakness.
7. Ny Traffic
Jockey: Horacio Karamanos
Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.
Owners: John Fanelli, Cash is King, LC Racing, Paul Braverman, and Team Hanley
Career record: 10 starts – 2 wins – 3 seconds – 2 thirds
Well-beaten by Authentic in last two starts. Make it three in a row.
8. Max Player
Jockey: Paco Lopez
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Owners: George Hall and SportBLX Thoroughbreds Corp.
Career record: 6 starts – 2 wins – 1 second – 2 third
The answer to the 2020 Triple Crown trivia question: Who is the only horse to start in all three legs of the series? He will also be the only horse not to win any of the three legs in which he competed.
9. Authentic
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owners: Spendthrift Farm, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing
Career record: 6 starts – 5 wins – 1 second – 0 thirds
The big horse is 5-for-6 life and improving with every start. The son of Into Mischief has had almost four weeks to recover from the Derby victory. A speed duel could be a problem is Art Collector and Thousand Words engage early. If Authentic is left alone on the lead, look out.
10. Pneumatic
Jockey: Joe Bravo
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Owner: Winchell Thoroughbreds
Career record: 5 starts – 3 wins – 0 seconds – 1 third
Handled Jesus’ Team easily in the Pegasus at Monmouth in most-recent start. Feels like he is a cut below the top contenders. Easily could surface deep in the trifecta or the superfecta.
11. Liveyourbeastlife
Jockey: Trevor McCarthy
Trainer: Jorge Abreu
Owner: William Lawrence
Career record: 8 starts – 2 wins – 1 second – 1 third
Would be the stunner of all stunners. A tossout.
The Picks
1. Authentic 2. Thousand Words 3. Swiss Skydiver
Black-Eyed Susan
The Black-Eyed Susan has been run since 1919 and covers a-mile-and-an-eighth on the main track. It has a purse of $250,000. The final race before the Preakness Stakes will be televised by NBC at 4:41 pm ET.
The picks: Landing Zone, Bonny South, Miss Marissa
Landing Zone is coming into the race against three open-lengths victories, granted against cheaper competition. However, she has major upside and can upset. Bonny South has been racing the best fillies out there and was within 3 1/2 lengths of Swiss Skydiver in last. If Swiss Skydiver were in the Black-Eyed Susan rather than the Preakness she would be 1-5. Miss Marissa has won her last two starts and is a threat if she continues to improve.
