MLB Matchup of the Week: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers

The Major League Baseball season is entering the home stretch and the playoff races are heating up. The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are both in the playoff race in the National League and they will meet up this weekend for a pivotal three game series. The series opener on Friday night between the Cardinals and Brewers is the MLB Matchup of the Week.

St. Louis enters the week with a commanding 4.5 game lead in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals have been dominant in the second half of the season and have improved their record to 81-62 entering the week. Milwaukee still has some work to do if they are going to make the playoffs for a second straight season. The Brewers come into the week with a record of 74-68 and will need a terrific final two weeks to get the job done.

Wainwright Pitching Well For Cardinals

The biggest advantage for the Cardinals in this game will be having Adam Wainwright on the mound. The veteran has had some rough spots in the 2018 season, but he is pitching extremely well of late. Wainwright is 11-9 with a 4.16 earned run average this season, and has won each of his last two starts. The Cardinals have a terrific bullpen that will be ready to go if the veteran has one of his rough outings in this game.

St. Louis doesn't have a ton of huge names in their everyday lineup, but they have been putting up huge numbers of late. The Cardinals are led by Paul Goldschmidt's 29 home runs this season, but several other players lead the team in offensive categories as well. Kolten Wong leads the team with a .286 batting average and Marcell Ozuna leads the team with 81 runs batted in. The Cardinals just find ways to score, and that should continue in this series.

Yelich Powering Brewers Offense

Outfielder Christian Yelich is having another MVP type season in Milwaukee, and he is doing all that he can to keep his team in the playoff race. Yelich leads the team with a .330 batting average to go along with 44 home runs and 97 runs batted in. Teammate Mike Moustakas has hit 31 home runs this season, but is currently nursing an injury and hasn't been in the lineup of late. The Brewers will have to score runs to knock off the Cardinals.

Right hander Adrian Houser will make this start for the Brewers in this game, and he has been pitching well. Houser is 6-5 with a 3.59 earned run average this season, and has not lost a game since the beginning of August. The Brewers do have one of the top bullpens in baseball, and they can cover plenty of innings if necessary.

St. Louis Wins Series Opener

The St. Louis Cardinals have been the best team in the National League since the All Star Break, and their starting rotation has been a big reason why. Adam Wainwright takes the ball in this game, and he has been terrific of late. The Cardinals are a terrific home team in 2019, and they are going to win this weekend series against the Brewers. Bet the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series opener on Friday night. LB Matchup of the Week: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers
