National League Matchup of the Week: New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

Playoff races are heating up in the National League, and there are a ton of big series' on the calendar for this week. The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves are set to meet up this weekend, in what will be an important series for each team. The Braves are trying to catch the Dodgers for the top record in the National League, while the Mets are hoping to reach the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

The Atlanta Braves enter the week with a ton of momentum after taking two out of three games from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Atlanta still has a commanding lead in the NL East, and enters the week with a record of 74-52. The New York Mets have also been playing great baseball of late, and come into this week with a record of 64-60. The Mets currently sit just outside of the playoff picture in the National League, and need to keep winning games. The series opener on Friday night is the National League Matchup of the Week.

DeGrom Makes Start For Mets

The Mets will open up this series with Jacob DeGrom on the mound, and that is a good sign for New York. DeGrom is the reigning Cy Young Award winner in the National League and has been pitching well again this season. DeGrom comes into this game with a record of just 8-7, but still sports an impressive 2.61 earned run average. The hard throwing right hander has not lost a game since June 28, and almost always gives his team a chance to win when he takes the mound.

Injuries continue to plague the New York Mets, and they will be without All Star Jeff McNeil in this game. McNeil was hitting .332 on the season, and his absence leaves a huge hole in the Mets lineup. New York does still have a star in their lineup in first baseman Pete Alonso. Alonso has blasted 40 home runs this season, and leads the team with 95 runs batted in. The Mets will have to score some runs to beat the Atlanta Braves.

Braves Finding Plenty of Offense

The Atlanta Braves are scoring runs like crazy this season, and Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuna Jr. are leading the charge. Freeman is leading the team with a .303 batting average and has also driven in a team-high 98 runs. Acuna has blasted 35 home runs to lead the team, and continues to play sparkling defense in center field. The Braves have one of the best offenses in baseball, but will face a tough pitcher in DeGrom.

Mike Foltynewicz will be on the mound for Atlanta on Friday night, and he has struggled a bit this season. Foltynewicz has battled through some injuries, and just hasn't been able to find his rhythm. The hard throwing right hander is just 4-5 with a 6.09 earned run average this season. The Mets aren't a great offensive team, but Foltynewicz will have to keep the ball in the park to earn the win.

Mets Win Important Series Opener

The New York Mets are playing some great baseball of late, and starting pitching has been a huge part of it. Atlanta is an extremely talented team, but they will be running into a dominant pitcher in this game. Jacob DeGrom is going to quiet the bats of Atlanta and lead his team to victory in the series opener. Bet the New York Mets over the Atlanta Braves in the series opener on Friday night.
