Certain teams are rounding into form and others are showing that there is a lot of work to do just over one month into the season. Similarly is the case for the two teams meeting in Seattle this week.
The Seattle Mariners are 16-13 and in second place of the American League West. The Baltimore Orioles are 13-15 and sit at the bottom of the rung in the AL East. Baltimore had a two-week stretch in mid-April where it really struggled, but has now won three of the last four games. The sportsbook has the line up and Seattle is the favorite to win Monday’s opening game at -129.
The Seattle Mariners had a successful weekend as they won two or three games against the Los Angeles Angels. Their shutout victory on Sunday was just what they needed as they head home to take on the Orioles. Seattle has been struggling and the Mariners are hoping that the series win against the Angels will take their minds off of the mounting injuries in their lineup. It was a shutout victory Sunday after the teams split their first pair games of the series. However, with injuries lining up for the Mariners, they have a lot to ponder.
Star-Studded Lineup for Orioles
Veteran Matt Harvey showed why he is called :the Dark Knight: in the world of baseball. Harvey threw a solid 5 2/3 innings as the Orioles were able to beat the favorite Athletics in Oakland Coliseum. Despite a rash of injuries over the past five years, his performance makes him the man on whom the Orioles can rely.
The Orioles will turn to second-year man Dean Kremer on Monday. Kramer was thrashed all over the park in his last time out against the New York Yankees. He allowed six runs on 10 hits, including two home runs, while striking out only four hitters in just 4.1 innings. The young right-hander has been unable to get through the fifth inning in his last three starts and enters the game with a 2.00 WHIP and 8.40 ERA in 15 total innings pitched.
Nonetheless, the Orioles are playing their best baseball right now. They split the series against the Yankees and followed with a 2-1 series victory over Oakland. What makes this performance commendable is that they are without their key hitter, Anthony Santander.
Without Santander, another star performer for the Orioles, Cedric Mullins, has raised his game while at the top of the order with five RBIs in his last seven games. Hitting an average of .321 with nine RBIs, the breakout star is having his best year yet. The Orioles will be hoping that their lineup fires up against Seattle.
The Mariners will be hoping to continue where they left off against the Angels. However, with a list of injuries in their starting pitching, they will be turning this game into a bullpen start. Irrespective of the success their pitchers have shown so far, the current scenario is different. They have to choose their pitchers for their encounter against the Orioles.
In terms of hitters, Seattle’s J.P Crawford had a productive series against Los Angeles with five hits in 12 at-bats. Baseball pundits believe that the young star is still trying to find his groove as he is currently batting .266 with eight RBIs. The Mariners are only averaging 4.19 runs while their pitching staff has posted a team ERA of 3.98.
On the whole, the Mariners haven’t played up to their preseason expectations. They lost four straight games before their series win against the Angels this weekend and pitching — their strength — is up in the air due to so many injuries.
Baltimore is having a season to forget as it looks up at the rest of the division. Winning five out of their last eight has the Orioles envisioning greater things for this franchise. It appears as though they might have rounded the corner as they have 33 runs in those eight games and their pitching has been keeping them in games. The Mariners’ hot start has them near the top of the standings, but they have struggled as of late. Lately they are not as intimidating as they were expected to be. They only won three of their last eight games, and with their pitching struggling, Seattle is ripe for the upset. The current MLB series betting line in the sportsbook is Seattle -145 and we like Baltimore.
Pick: Baltimore Orioles +115 on the series
