The New York Yankees are in a free fall and it continues to get uglier. The team that entered the season as the sports betting favorite to win the World Series is now in danger of missing the playoffs completely. BetUs Sportsbook has posted odds on whether the Yankees will make the playoffs and needless to say, the odds don’t look so hot.
Slumping In September
The Yankees were a healthy 19-13 at the end of August and held the lead in the American League East before their series with the Tampa Bay Rays (that started Aug. 31) but everything has gone downhill since. The Yankees broke a five-game losing streak Wednesday, beating Toronto, 7-2. Still, they have lost eight of 11. They lost three of four to the Baltimore Orioles and the opening two to the Toronto Blue Jays in this series. There’s no question that both the Jays and the O’s have exceeded expectations but the fact that the Yankees are getting spanked by them is not a good sign for their World Series prospects.
Taking a look at the current standings, the Yankees are third in the American League East and are a whopping six games out of first. Considering we’ve already played 43 games of the 60-game season, time is ticking. Time might have run out as they somehow have to close that gap with only 17 games remaining. The good news is there’s a chance the Yankees still make the playoffs because the field has been expanded for the shortened season.
MLB Expands Playoffs For 2020
When betting this prop, it’s important to remember that Major League Baseball has expanded the playoffs for this season. Normally, the three teams that win the divisions in each league make the playoffs followed by two wild cards. However, in 2020, the playoffs have been expanded to eight teams in each league. That means that we’ll have the three division winners along with the five best teams beyond that in each the American and National Leagues. Taking a look at the current standings, the Yankees would currently slot in as the No. 8 seed in the AL. They hold a 1.5-game lead on the Orioles and a two-game lead on the Detroit Tigers. If you’re betting on them to make the postseason, you’re expecting them to fend those teams – and anyone else – off.
What’s Wrong with the Yankees?
The Yankees were supposed to be a star-studded unit that dominated the AL but as we look at the standings, they’d be lucky to make the playoffs. A lot has to go wrong for that to happen.
The team has struggled in numerous areas but the most surprising has to be hitting. With so many big-time players on the roster, it’s surprising that this team is 21st in team batting average at .235. They are eighth in home runs but they are 17th in runs overall, so they’re just not scoring.
Pitching is also of great concern as ace Gerrit Cole hasn’t been Cy Young-caliber this season. The Yankees won his first four starts but the team has lost each of the last four times Cole has been on the mound. He’s given up 12 earned runs in his last 22.2 innings of work. The bullpen is of greater concern as it ranks 18th overall. That doesn’t tell the whole story as the bullpen gave up a 10-run inning to the Blue Jays this week.
The Yankees are running out of time but do you think they make the playoffs? You can bet that prop at BetUs right now!
