2019 NBA Draft Recap

2019 NBA Draft
Thursday, June 20th
Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY

What has been years in the making has finally come to fruition. Zion Williamson, the biggest hyped prospect since LeBron James, was the first overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft.

Williamson, who had a stellar freshman year at Duke, was drafted first overall by the New Orlean Pelicans, who were big winners in the NBA lottery. Zion will join a Pelicans team that received a bounty of young talent and upside in the Anthony Davis trade. Zion will pair well with Lonzo Ball who is a promising guard with good court vision and a high basketball IQ.

The Memphis Grizzlies selected March Madness standout Ja Morant. Morant made some noise in the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament. Morant led Murray State to the second round of the tournament. The crafty playmaker led Murray State's offense with averaged 24.5 points, 10 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game for Murray State.

Morant is an intelligent guard with explosive offense and excellent court vision. He's aggressive and efficient with the ball. Morant will be a big boost to a Memphis offense that struggled last season. The Grizzlies were the lowest scoring team in the NBA in 2018-2019.

For a time, after the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, there was talk of Ja Morant possible leapfrogging Williamson. That was never going to happen. Zion Williamson's aura is bigger than basketball. This is a kid the world has been watching since he was a 16 year-old high schooler performing windmill dunks and being featured on ESPN.

With the third pick in the NBA Draft, the New York Knicks selected Zion Williamson's Duke teammate, RJ Barrett. Barrett, who did the media circuit leading up to the draft, was expected to go to the Knicks. The Toronto native has experienced success at an array of basketball competition. In addition to having a fantastic season at Duke where he finished with the fourth triple-double in the history of the program, Barrett played in the Jordan Brand Classic International Game, FIBA U17 World Championship, Nike Hoop Summit, Basketball Without Borders Global Camp, and Geico Nationals with Montverde Academy. This was all before he opted to forgo his final season of high school basketball and reclassify to the high school class of 2018.

The Pelicans were all over this draft. Through the AD trade with the Lakers, the Pelicans possessed the fourth pick in addition to the first pick they won in the lottery. The Lakers drafted De'Andre Hunter with the fourth pick. When the AD trade becomes official, New Orleans is expected to move Hunter to the Hawks who will receive the 17th pick Nickeil Alexander-Walker via the Nets.

Bol Bol, who was projected to be an early first round pick dropped to 44th. Bol, the son of former NBA player Manute Bol was drafted by the Miami Heat who then traded him to the Denver Nuggets. This was a great pick-up by the Nuggets, who already have arguably the best young core in the NBA.
