NBA 2019-2020 Season Betting Preview

The much-awaited 2019-2020 NBA season is officially here. The season tips off October 22nd with a TNT double header between the Pelicans and Raptors and the Lakers versus the Clippers.

The latter may be the most anticipated game of the season already. Both L.A. teams are the favorites to win the NBA title in 2020. The Clippers, led by Kawhi Leonard are +300 to win the championship while LeBron James' Lakers are close behind at +350. Milwaukee leads the race in the East at +500 with Philadelphia in second at +700 along with the Western Houston Rockets.

The Clippers are my early favorite to win the NBA title. They possess arguably the deepest lineup -- offensively and defensively -- in the NBA. Patrick Beverley, Landry Shamet, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Ivica Zubac make up the starting five.

Pat Beverley is a nuisance on defense that can stifle any opponent. Kawhi Leonard is an elite defender that comes up big when it matters most. Leonard is inarguably a top 3 player in the NBA today. Paul George is a superstar that can score at will and plays hard on both ends of the court.

Lou Williams, Maurice Harkless, Montrezl Harrell, and Patrick Patterson are among some of the talent coming off the bench for L.A. The Clippers have a variety of different lineups they can put out without experiencing much of a drop-off.

The Lakers have some serious depth as well. Rajon Rondo, Danny Green, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Dwight Howard make up the starting five. Quinn Cook, KCP, Kyle Kuzma, Avery Bradley, Alex Caruso, Jared Dudley, Javale McGee, and DeMarcus Cousins. Ridiculous.

Expect a lot of open shots for Danny Green. It will be a tall ask for teams to cover this much talent. LeBron can drive and kick out to Green or Davis all day.

In the end, I think coaching will make the difference in L.A. Doc Rivers is a superb coach with plenty of experience. He will have the easier coaching task considering the personalities of his superstars.

The Bucks (+500) will suffer from the loss of Malcolm Brogdon. Once the Giannis comes off the floor there will be a huge gap in talent. This team has serviceable players, but they're not as deep as some of the other teams.

Philadelphia (+700) will be the team to watch in the East. the addition of Al Horford will be huge. The Horford/Embiid combo gives the Sixers two skyscrapers down low that can step out and drain jumpers. Horford is one of the better big men from beyond the arc.

If Ben Simmons has worked on his jumper (and confidence) this summer, this team will be a problem. Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson round out a quality starting five for Philadelphia.

Until Kevin Durant returns, Brooklyn (+2000) isn't in consideration for the East. Even with Kyrie running the point, they lack the firepower to compete with teams like Boston and Miami, let alone Philly and the Bucks.

Boston (+2000) may be a sleeper to watch. The Celtics may have done some addition by subtraction by letting Kyrie go. It's no secret the team didn't like playing together. They performed much better in his absence. Adding Kemba Walker into the fold and giving Tatum a starting spot alongside Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown, and Daniel Theis can be effective.

Marcus Smart and Enes Kanter will be coming off the bench along with Tacko Fall. Don't sleep on the Celtics in 2019. At +650 to win the East, they're a bet worth taking.

Denver (+1400) is a crazy talented team with loads of young talent. They played well together last season and have tons of upside. Nikola Jokic is one of the best big men in the league. There's just too much talent in the West for me to comfortably bet on the Nuggets to win it all.

Houston (+700) and Golden State (+1000) are always live dogs. The intensity that Russell Westbrook brings to the Rockets will make a huge impact. It will be interesting to see how his ball-dominant style will work with James Harden's.

The lack of Klay Thompson and the departure of Cousins and Durant eliminates the Warriors from contention, in my opinion. Sure, they'll be good, but they won't win it all. After all, that's what we're betting here.

D'Angelo Russell is a very good addition to this team. His style will fit in well. It just won't be enough.
