College Basketball Game of the Week: Kansas Jayhawks v. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Kansas Jayhawks have been the cream of the crop in the Big 12 Conference for more than a decade, but they have some competition this season. One of the biggest competitors in 2018-19 is the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The two teams will meet up at historic Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday for the college basketball game of the week.

Kansas is once again atop the Big 12 Conference with a 5-2 record through their first seven games. The Jayhawks will have a tough matchup with Texas earlier in the week, but their focus will be on this game. Texas Tech will battle with TCU in advance of this matchup, and they have some work to do. The Red Raiders are just 4-3 so far in conference play, and are in the middle of the pack in the tough Big 12.

Bill Self Searching For Answers

Kansas head coach Bill Self thought he had a national championship team this season, but he has some work to do now. The Jayhawks lost star center Udoka Azubuike to a season ending injury in December, and Kansas hasn't been the same team. Kansas is outscoring their opponents by just over seven points per game this season, which is far less dominant than the Jayhawks have been in recent seasons. Self is a proven winner, and you can expect that he will figure something out.

The best player for the Jayhawks so far this season has been junior Dedric Lawson. Lawson leads the team with 19.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, but needs some help down low. Shooting guard Lagerald Vick gives the Jayhawks one of the best shooters in college basketball, but he isn't able to create his own shot. Kansas doesn't have much depth, and they have been forced to slow the game down to save some stamina for the latter stages of each game.

Texas Tech Defense is Elite

When you start talking about Texas Tech, the first thing that must be mentioned is their defense. The Red Raiders are allowing just over 56 points per game so far this season, which is the second best average in the country. Big 12 teams have found scoring easier against Texas Tech, but they should matchup well against the Jayhawks. The Red Raiders are scoring just 70 points per game, and they are still searching for more production from their bench.

Jarrett Culver has been the star for Texas Tech so far this season, and leads the team with 18.5 points per game. Culver is shooting better than 52 percent from the floor, and his draft stock is rising with each game. Just two other players are scoring in double figures for the Red Raiders, and they will need players to step up in this game.

Jayhawks Too Much at Home

Despite the recent struggles for Kansas, they are still in great shape to win yet another Big 12 Championship. The Jayhawks have elite level talent on their roster, and Bill Self will find a way to get some wins. Texas Tech can guard anyone in the country, but their offense isn't good enough to challenge for a Big 12 title. Expect this to be a low scoring game, but the Jayhawks will pull away late. Bet the Kansas Jayhawks over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
