NFL Lock of the Week: Buffalo Bills vs. Carolina Panthers - Preseason Week 2

Buffalo Bills vs. Carolina Panthers
Friday, August 16th - 7:00PM ET - Bank of America Stadium
Betting Line: TBD

Carolina got off to a good start last week. They left Soldier Field with a 23-13 victory over the Chicago Bears. This week, The Panthers are at home where they will host the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo also got started on the right foot. They hosted their Week 1 preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Bills came away with a 24-16 victory in their preseason opener.

The Panthers got plenty of help from rookie Kicker Joey Slye who scored 11 of the Panthers 23 points. Slye converted two extra points and kicked two field goals. He connected on a game-long 55-yarder in the second quarter. Slye was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game.

Carolina rushed the ball 25 times for 96 yards against Chicago. Eight different Panthers recorded a carry in the game. Elijah Holyfield, the rookie running back out of Georgia, was the one to take the ball to the promised land. He was also the only to fumble. Holyfield ran for 26 yards on nine carries.

Teams utilize the preseason in a variety of ways. Some teams use it to get their younger or new players reps, some use it to try out new schemes, others use it to decide starters and final rosters. If Week 1 was any indication, Coach Ron Rivera is doing all of the above.

The Panthers played three quarterbacks, handed off the ball to five running backs, and passed to 14 different players. Twelve Panthers recorded a catch against the Bears.

Carolina's defense played very well. They held Chicago to just 170 passing yards (0 touchdowns) and 82 rushing yards. Marquis Hayes recorded four tackles (three for a loss), and two sacks. Brian Burns also picked up a pair of tackles, both sacks. Andre Smith and Corrion Ballard led the team with five tackles a piece.

In Buffalo, fans were treated to a rushing attack by the Bills. Buffalo ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Wade broke out for a game-high 65-yard touchdown.

Matt Barkley had a good game. He passed for 126 yards on 9/14 passing. He through threw for a touchdown and committed zero turnovers.

The Bills threw to 17 receivers in Week 1. They passed for 218 yards and a touchdown.

The Colts didn't play bad. They rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown and passed for 209 yards and an INT. Buffalo just played better.

Both teams played well last week, but only one of them played the Bears. Indianapolis is a very good team, but they were on the road and lost by one score. The Panthers dominated Chicago on their home turf. This isn't an easy feat, even in preseason.

Take Carolina to win at home in Week 2.
