Last Season Recap

Dante Pettis and Kendrick Bourne each caught a touchdown pass.

Arizona Cardinals vs San Francisco 49ers News & Betting Picks

Below we’ll be taking a more detailed look at the Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL Week 1 matchup. Scroll down for the latest news regarding both teams, injury reports, and a look at last year’s team statistics.

Arizona pulled off the biggest trade of this past offseason. They sent David Johnson to Houston in exchange for DeAndre Hopkins. While Johnson was a huge value running back a couple years ago, he has not put up his usual numbers in recent years. The trade immediately improves a receiving corps that already boasts experience and speed in Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk.

The addition of Hopkins makes Arizona a dangerous mid- and deep-field threat for any opponent. If Kenyan Drake blossoms into a consistent source of yards for the backfield, defenses will have a tough time dealing with all of Arizona’s way of producing offense.

Arizona added OT Josh Jones from Houston with their third pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Their first selection was LB Isaiah Simmons from Clemson. Quarterback Kyler Murray is heading into his second season. In his debut as a rookie, Murray delivered 3,722 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He’ll be looking to improve on last years’ 87.4 passer rating.

San Francisco tied with New Orleans and Green Bay for the best record in the NFC (13-3). They did so while posting an NFC-best +169-point differential. The Niners didn’t just win. They dominated. They won seven games by double-digits.

San Fran was a powerhouse all season. The offense was as potent as any, particularly on the ground. Three different backs carried the ball 120+ times.

Raheem Mostert led the group with 137 attempts, 772 yards, and eight touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry. Matt Breida carried the ball 123 times for 623 yards and a touchdown on 5.1 yards per carry. Tevin Coleman ran the ball 137 times for 544 yards and six touchdowns on 4.0 yards per carry. Collectively, the team rushed for 2,305 yards and 23 touchdowns.

George Kittle continued his emergence as a star receiving tight end. Kittle led the team in receptions (85), receiving yards (1,053), and touchdowns (5).

The Niners defense recovered 15 touchdowns (4th). DeForest Buckner led the team with four fumble recoveries and a touchdown, but he has been shipped to the Colts. Richard Sherman led the team with three interceptions. Sherman, Fred Warner, and Ahkello Witherspoon each took one back to the house. Warner also led the team with 118 tackles.

The 49ers added linebacker Joe Walker from Arizona, DE Kerry Hyder from Dallas, WR Travis Benjamin from Los Angeles, OT Tom Compton from the Jets, and OT Jamar Taylor from Atlanta this offseason.

Straight Up Pick (Gilad Chudler)

The Arizona Cardinals had a disappointing season last year despite a decent start. Halfway through they were 3-3-1 before going on a serious losing streak. They ended up 5-10-1, but are feeling optimistic with the team they have this year.

Led by Kyler Murray who will enter his sophomore season in 2020, the former Heisman Trophy winner threw for 3,722 yards, had 20 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions during as a rookie. He’ll depend on WR Larry Fitzgerald this year if they are to improve their fortunes in 2020.

The San Francisco 49ers finished last year with a 13-3 record and made it all the way to the Super Bowl. In the NFC West they went 5-1, only losing once to the Seattle Seahawks. They easily won their division, arguably the most competitive in the NFL, and earned the top overall seed in the NFC.

Although the Kansas City Chiefs bested them in the Super Bowl 31-20, it was a stellar season for San Francisco and we expect them to be highly competitive again this year. They should have no problems defeating Arizona on Sunday but expect a high scoring game. Consider an over bet for this one and definitely expect the San Francisco 49ers to win.

Over/Under Pick (Zack Robinson)

An interesting matchup from the NFC West between two young teams on the rise. The Arizona Cardinals offensive lineup is looking really good with QB Kyler Murray, RB Kenyan Drake and WR’s DeAndre Hopkins and Larry Fitzgerald.

The San Francisco 49ers already proved they are a serious threat on the NFC, but QB Jimmy Garoppolo still needs to show more confidence as the leader of the offensive unit. The Niners’ won both games in 2019 (28-25 and 36-26) and the total has gone over in four of San Francisco’s last five games against an NFC West opponent. Go with the over in a close one.
