Chicago Bears vs Detroit Lions History
Chicago has been doing well versus Detroit lately. They have beaten their division rival the last four times they’ve played. In 2019, the Bears outscored Detroit by 11 points over two games. All in all these divisional rivals have faced each other a total of 180 times. So far, the Chicago Bears have built up a substantial lead in the series 101-74-5. Interestingly enough, these two have tied a total of 5-times prior.
Last Season Recap
As aforementioned, the Bears got the better of the Lions in their two NFC North matchups last season. The first meeting came in Week 10. The Bears entered this contest riding a 4-game losing streak and were desperate for a rebound. The Lions were the team they needed to face as Chicago was able to snap that streak with a 20-13 win over Detroit. Trubisky was the driving force behind that win. Despite only throwing for 173-passing yards, Trubisky was able to deliver 3-passing touchdowns.
The Lions and Bears would meet again in Week 13 for another NFC North showdown. The Lions were eager to avenge their loss and although the game was close, Chicago came out on top 24-20. Trubisky came up big for Chicago once again, putting up 338-passing yards, three touchdowns and a lone interception. David Blough, filling in for an injured Stafford, did his best to keep up with 280-passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception as well.
Chicago Bears vs Detroit Lions News & Betting Picks
NFL betting veterans will be eager to get a detailed look at the Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions Week 1 contest. Below we’ll be covering the latest news from both teams, injury reports and more. There will also be a good look at each team’s recent stats.
Mitchell Trubisky took a minor step back in 2019. He followed up a 3,223, 24 touchdown, 12-interception 2018 season by passing for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was also sacked an additional 14 times and dropped his completion percentage and yards-per-attempt.
Trubisky was the anchor that held back this Chicago team all season. The Bears offense ranked in the bottom-7 in points scored, total yards, passing and rushing yards. Defensively, the Bears ranked in the top-10 in the same categories.
To help remedy their offensive woes, the Bears acquired Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles. Foles’ presence in Chicago is two-fold. It will push Trubisky to improve and play like his job is on the line (which it is), and/or it will provide the Bears with a better player at QB; improvement either way.
Chicago finished the 2019 regular season 8-8. Minnesota clinched a Wild Card spot with a 10-6 record. A more productive offense could have very well accounted for two additional wins. Five of Chicago’s eight losses were by eight points or less.
Matt Stafford returns under center for the Detroit Lions. He’ll be joined by rookie D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Johnson in the backfield. Wideouts Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., and Danny Amendola along with TE T.J. Hockenson will be Stafford’s primary targets.
The Lions are coming off a terrible season where they struggled on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the Lions were more like kittens. They ranked in the bottom-6 in points allowed, total yards allowed, as well as passing and rushing yards allowed.
The Lions picked up CB Jeff Okudah from Ohio State in the 2020 NFL draft. Ultimately he should help stop some of the bleeding in the secondary. Okudah will be joined by Desmond Trufant at cornerback, Duron Harmon at strong safety, and free safety Tracy Walker.

Straight Up Pick (Gilad Chudler)
Last year the Chicago Bears went into 2019 with high expectations after winning the NFC North Division in 2018. Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out for them how they would have liked and they ended their season at 8-8. They were plagued by injuries last year. Keeping their team healthy will be big focus this season.
The big question mark for Chicago will be around the quarterback position. Mitchell Trubisky had a great 2018 season finishing at 11-3 as a starter. In 2019 he didn’t play so well and in the end Nick Foles took over the starting position.
The Lions also struggled in 2019 and ended up with a 3-12-1 record. They started out with a couple of wins but it was a steady downhill trajectory after that. Detroit will enter its 12th season with Matthew Stafford at QB. He suffered a broken collarbone last year but is reported to have made a full recovery.
Just looking at the discrepancy between these teams, a moneyline bet on the Bears looks like a good opportunity for this game.
Over/Under Pick (Zack Robinson)
The Chicago Bears are giving QB Mitch Trubisky one last chance to prove himself while Nick Foles awaits patiently on the bench. Despite having some troubles last season, the Bears won both games against the Detroit Lions (20-13 and 24-20).
Yes, the Bears won both matches last year, but now the Lions have QB Matthew Stafford back. If healthy, Stafford can become one of the best QB’s in the league and WR’s Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones have become one of the best duos to catch deep passes. Go over.
