Houston Texans vs Kansas City Chiefs History

The rivalry history between these two teams consists of 12-games, which includes two postseason matchups. In that span, the Chiefs have gotten the better of Houston 7-games to five. The two postseason matchups include an AFC Wild Card Game from 2016 that saw Kansas City come out on top 30-0. There’s also last year’s AFC Divisional contest which we will cover down below.

Last Season Recap

The Texans were sitting on a pretty early lead into the second quarter of their AFC Divisional Playoff game this past January. They had a 24-0 lead over the Chiefs and were clicking all over the field.

At this point, Deshaun Watson had completed two touchdowns, Ka’imi Fairbarn kicked a field goal, Lonnie Johnson Jr. returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, and the defense held Pat Mahomes to zero points. Everything was looking good.

Then Mahomes and the Andy Reid-coached offense found their groove. The Chiefs scored three touchdowns in less than five minutes. They added another score with 0:44 left in the half to go up 28-24.

Mahomes would go on to finish the game with 321 yards and five touchdowns. Mahomes was not sacked. He did not fumble. He did not throw an interception. From the second quarter on, Mahomes was money. Kansas City won the game 51-31.

However, when Kansas City hosted the Texans in Week 6, things were slightly different. Mahomes passed for 273 yards, three TDs, and an INT. However, Deshaun Watson passed for 280 yards, one TD, and two INT’s. He also ran in another two touchdowns. Houston won the game 31-24.

Defending Super Bowl Champs Look to Set the Pace

Thursday night Patrick Mahomes and team face off against the Houston Texans. The defending Super Bowl champions will look to start the season off with a win and send a message that they are as good as ever.

At only 24 years old, Mahomes is arguably already the best QB in the league and he’s only getting started. He’ll be getting the ball into the hands of tight end Travis Kelce who ended last season with 1,229 receiving yards.

On the Houston side Deshaun Watson is a capable quarterback and they almost defeated the Chiefs last season in the AFC divisional round. He’ll be missing DeAndre Hopkins this year who was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in a highly unpopular trade.

This is one of the easier games to call. Just look at the difference in the moneyline odds and you’ll see that the Chiefs are clearly the favorites for Thursday and we predict they will win.

Point Spread Pick (Devlin Duckett)

The Chiefs were 10-point favorites in the AFC Divisional playoff game against the Texans last season. Kansas City stormed back from 24 points down, eventually winning the matchup 51-31. Since then, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl and have geared themselves up for a serious repeat bid in 2020-21. Patrick Mahomes is happy and healthy, primed to enjoy monumental success. Rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is stepping in to fill the shoes that Damien Williams has opted out of. Kansas City’s defense ranked seventh last season, and the 2020-21 unit is an effective complement to the Chiefs offensive juggernaut.

The Texans have quickly gone from being contenders to pretenders, unless WRs Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb have a resurgence. Houston traded away Deshaun Watson’s most lethal weapon in the offseason, shipping DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for RB David Johnson. Johnson is often injured and is the epitome of “boom or bust”, while Hopkins is one of the best overall receivers in the NFL. Cobb & Cooks have been added to fill that chasm at receiver, but Houston is weaker since making these moves. The Texans defense was below average last season, and will have their work cut out for them in Arrowhead Stadium.

Devlin’s pick: Kansas City Chiefs -10 (Even Money)

Over/Under Pick (Zack Robinson)

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are a well-established offensive machine (28.2 PPG in 2019) while DeShaun Watson and the Houston Texans (23.6 PPG in 2019) will have to learn to solve tough games, like this one, without DeAndre Hopkins (traded to the Arizona Cardinals).

Both QB’s signed juicy extensions during the offseason and both want to show that they are worth it. The last time the Texans and Chiefs faced each other at Arrowhead, Kansas City won 51-31 and the total has gone over in four of Kansas City’s last six games against Houston. You can expect a pass-driving game; go over once again.
