Straight Up (Gilad Chudler)
Sunday’s prime-time game will feature two of the NFL’s strongest teams, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots opened their regular season with a 21-11 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
QB Cam Newton made 15 rushing attempts, disregarding typical quarterback strategies and putting his body at risk of injury. It is a signature move of Newton and he used it to great success to lead his team to a win. He rushed for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns, stats you would expect from a running back.
The Patriots’ other touchdown came from Sony Michel. Their focus on running worked in their first game, but will be put to the test against a much tougher opponent, the Seattle Seahawks.
The Seahawks also had a victorious season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Russell Wilson led the charge with four touchdown passes. He hit his targets 31-of-35 times for 322 yards and carried the ball three times for 29 yards rushing.
DK Metcalf also had a great season opener with 95 yards from four receptions and arguably the game’s best touchdown in the third quarter. It was a 38-yard pass and put Seattle well ahead of the Falcons.
Although both teams are looking solid we’re going to give this one to the Seahawks, who you should consider for a point spread bet.
Against the Spread (Sebastian Morera)
Despite the change at quarterback, the Patriots looked like their usual selves in their season opener. Cam Newton had a decent day but looked great on the ground as he tallied 75 rushing yards – the most of any Patriot. Now New England gets to prove it is still part of the NFL elite by taking on the Seahawks in Seattle.
The Seahawks are coming off a dominant 38-25 triumph over the Falcons. However, I’m expecting New England’s defense to give them a much tougher time. I also see the Pats pulling off the road upset, so take them against the spread here. The Seahawks gave up a ton of yardage to Atlanta, more than 500 on the day. I’m expecting New England’s offense to have its way with Seattle’s defense and to put up more touchdowns off that yardage than Atlanta did.
Over/Under (Zack Robinson)
Cam Newton led the way in Week 1 for the New England Patriots. They beat the Miami Dolphins 21-11 without the need of a passing TD, and the defense picked QB Ryan Fitzpatrick three times.
Russell Wilson (322 YDS, 4 TD in Week 1) and the Seattle Seahawks are not the Dolphins, not even close, so this is going to be New England’s first real test. Bill Belichick said so himself: “Russell Wilson is the best NFL player right now”.
Seattle scored 38 points against the Falcons in Week 1 and the total has gone over in their last five games against the Pats’. Go over in a good one.
