Straight Up (Sebastian Morera)
The Saints failed to get the job done against the Packers this past Monday night. It was interesting to see the one turnover they had on the night was when Drew Brees wasn’t on the field. But against the Lions, the Saints will be afforded the opportunity to turn the ball over and still come out on top.
Detroit picked up their first win of the season over the Cardinals this past weekend 26-23. Kyler Murray had to throw three picks on the day for Detroit to get the win. As long as the Saints avoid that many turnovers, they should have this one in the bag.
Against the Spread (Devlin Duckett)
Since handling the Buccaneers in Week 1, the Saints have stumbled to a 1-2 record. Without star wideout Michael Thomas, New Orleans’ offense has sputtered a bit. Drew Brees played pretty spectacularly in the Saints’ 37-30 loss in Week 3 to the Packers, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Brees completed 29-of-36 passes for 288 yards and three TDs, including two scoring strikes to RB Alvin Kamara. The versatile Kamara caught 13 passes for 139 yards, while rushing for 58 yards on just six carries. New Orleans’ offense hung tight with Green Bay, but the Saints ran out of time. Thomas is expected back in Week 4, so Brees will have even more firepower at his disposal vs Detroit.
The Saints’ passing defense has been picked on this season, but in fairness they did face Tom Brady, Derek Carr, and Aaron Rodgers. Matt Stafford is another gunslinger, and he just got his favorite toy back, too. WR Kenny Golladay returned to action in Week 3, catching six passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Golladay’s presence helped to ignite an already explosive collection of offensive talent. The Lions won their first game of the season, defeating the surly Arizona Cardinals 26-23.
Detroit is deep offensively, and they’ll trade body shots with New Orleans all game. Expect a very close and high-scoring game, with the Saints winning by a field goal. Bad news for the Lions, but good news for bettors who took Detroit +4.
