Seattle Seahawks vs Atlanta Falcons Rivalry History

The Seattle Seahawks have faced the Atlanta Falcons a total of 19 times in franchise history. During that span, Seattle has managed to get the better of Atlanta 11 games to eight. Their most recent meeting came in October of last year. The Falcons hosted Seattle for a regular-season matchup that saw Atlanta lose at home 20-27.

Last Season Recap

The Seahawks traveled to Atlanta and defeated the Falcons in last season’s Week 8 matchup. Atlanta entered the matchup riding a 5-game losing streak and was desperate for a turnaround.  Due to Matt Ryan’s Week 7 injury, the Falcons started Matt Schaub at quarterback. Although Schaub was able to tear Seattle’s defense for 460 passing yards, it was not enough to turn Atlanta’s bad luck around. Continuing the trend of putting up yards and not scoring (more on that later), Julio Jones caught 10 passes for 152 yards but failed to find the end zone.

On the other side, Russell Wilson only needed 182-passing yards to lead Seattle to a victory. Granted, Wilson was still able to put up two passing touchdowns. Running back Chris Carson added 90-yards and a rushing touchdown on the ground to solidify Seattle’s 27-20 win over Atlanta.

Straight Up Pick (Gilad Chudler)

The Seattle Seahawks are getting ready for what is expected to be a very good season. This year the Seahawks added All-Pro Safety Jamal Adams to their defense, vastly improving their ability to stop runs.

Seattle had a great season last year and ended up with an 11-5 record. They finished second in the NFC West but earned a fifth overall seed in the NFC. They won their first playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles but lost to the Packers in the NFC Divisional Round. With Russell Wilson entering his ninth season, he’s in his prime and they are going to be in contention for winning the NFC West this year.

The Atlanta Falcons are no slouches either. Led by former league MVP Matt Ryan, he’s thrown for more than 4,100 yards every year since 2011. Their main issue the last couple of seasons has been defense, but they added LB Dante Fowler in the offseason as well as DE Charles Harris in an effort to round out their team.

This could end up being one of the highest scoring games of Week 1 so keep a close eye on this one. In the end the Seahawks will take a win despite being on the road. They’ll be well rested going in to the first game of the season and Atlanta won’t have the home advantage without their fans in the stadiums.

Over/Under Pick (Zack Robinson)

With two of the best arms in the NFL involved, there should be fireworks in this one. QB’s Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) and Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks) have proved to be very good (both on the Total Passing Yards Top 10 in 2019), but also both have come up short in recent seasons.

The game will also have some other top offensive players like WR’s Julio Jones, Tyler Lockett, Calvin Ridley, DK Metcalf and RB’s Todd Gurley and Chris Carson. Last season, the Seahawks beat the Falcons 27-20 in Georgia. Go with the over in a back and forth game.

Seahawks vs Falcons Stats

Seattle Seahawks

After a year of sub-par defense, Seattle decided to invest in building up its defense. The Seahawks drafted LB Jordyn Brooks out of Texas Tech with their first pick in the draft. They followed that up by selecting Tennessee’s DE Darrell Taylor 48th overall.

Jordyn Brooks will join Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright in the linebacker corps to make for a trifecta of power and speed on defense.

The Seahawks added Greg Olsen at tight end to compliment Jacob Hollister and Will Dissly. Both Hollister and Dissly had memorable plays last year and performed when their teams needed them. Olsen will help drive the competition to help strengthen the position for Seattle.

The stars of this receiving corps are Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. Lockett caught for 1,057 yards and eight touchdowns. Metcalf caught for 900 yards and seven touchdowns. Both players had over 100 receptions on the season. The Seahawks added Phillip Dorsett to their receiving corps in late March. Dorsett is coming off a 29-reception, 397-receiving yard, 5 touchdown season.

Chris Carson is establishing himself as a true #1 back. For the second year in a row, Carson eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark. In 2019, the then third-year back rushed for 1,230 yards and seven touchdowns on 4.4 yards per carry.

Russell Wilson continues to show why he’s one of the most reliable quarterbacks of this era. He passed for 4,110 yards (6th) and 31 touchdowns (3rd) while throwing a career-low five interceptions.

Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta was crippled by a poor defense last season. Testament to this is last season’s loss to the Seahawks that saw Schaub throw for considerable yards yet still lose the game. In the past, Atlanta teams have been able to overcome a defensive crutch by wielding an unstoppable offense. Although the Falcons’ passing game is elite, their running game has a tough time measuring up. Ultimately Atlanta is hoping to turn this around with the offseason addition of Todd Gurley.

The addition of Todd Gurley II to the running game can make a difference. Gurley should benefit from having Jake Matthews and Matt Hennessy on the O-line.

Atlanta is hoping to continue their four-game winning streak when they host Seattle in their season opener. After going 1-7 before the bye, ATL finished the season with a strong 6-2 record.

Matt Ryan has to figure out how to find Julio Jones in the end zone. While Jones consistently finishes at or near the top of the league in receiving yards, his touchdown stats pale in comparison.

Jones is coming off a year in which he caught 99 passes (6th) for 1,394 yards (2nd), and six touchdowns (24th). Jones scored in only four games last season. Five of Jones’ six touchdowns were when Atlanta was behind in the scoreboard. Four of those six touchdowns were all in the first three games of the season. The other two were in Week 15 at San Francisco.

In 2018, Jones caught 113 passes for 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns. The year before? Just three touchdowns. If the Falcons are able to find Jones in the end zone with greater consistency, they should be able to deliver a winning season in 2020.
