Cardinals 2020 Betting Record
Point Spread: 7-9
Looking to improve over their 5-10-1 record from the previous year, the Arizona Cardinals weren’t expected to be world-beaters. Their season-win totals posted at a losing record with 7½ wins, and their Super Bowl odds were a hefty 60-1 entering the year.
By mid-November, they seemed certain to cash the over on the win total and were starting to be under serious consideration for playoff discussion. That would all fall to pieces in a 2-5 slide to end out the year. Though they would just manage to reach eight wins, they couldn’t manage a ninth and would be the odd team looking in, not qualifying for the postseason.
The season opened strong, with an upset road win over the San Francisco 49ers, followed up by a convincing win over the Washington Football Team. But hype over Kyler Murray’s quarterbacking soon cooled down as they lost the next two, against the Lions and Panthers, in which both the Cardinals were favored.
Arizona did establish itself as an under team in a month when overs were scoring at historical rates. They cashed the under on all four opening games.
Point Spread: 2-2
Arizona eventually shed the string of unders (after six in a row to open the season) and proceeded to win three straight, covering in each. The last of which, against the division-rival Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, gave them the lead in the division and a place in contemporary playoff talk.
Heading into their bye week, the stock on the Cardinals was high, but would return from their break to be upset by the Miami Dolphins under the surging rookie Tua Tagovailoa. That dropped them a game behind in the division.
Point Spread: 3-1
The high watermark of the Cardinals season came the following week against the Buffalo Bills. Laying a field goal, Arizona trailed by four points after a wild back and forth fourth quarter that had the Bills take the lead with just 34 seconds left. The game-winning play, a 43-yard heave into a trio of defenders surrounding DeAndre Hopkins resulted in what was dubbed the “Hail Murray.”
Things slid quickly thereafter, losing the next three. The first of those, to the Seahawks, cost them their tiebreaker and put them a game behind them and the Rams for the division lead. Subsequent losses to the Patriots and those same Rams left the Cards scrambling for a wild-card spot in order to make the postseason.
Point Spread: 0-4
With an extra Wild-Card spot up for grabs, Arizona still controlled its playoff fate and took steps to secure it with back-to-back wins over the NFC East opponents in the Giants and Eagles, covering the spread in both instances.
With only the 49ers and Rams standing between them and the final wild-card berth, the Cardinals wilted — first losing 20-12 to San Francisco, and then with a final lunge for the seventh seed, fell 18-7 to the Rams with a backup quarterback.
Though they would just cover the expected number of wins, they would fall short of the postseason spot and a .500 record.
Point Spread: 2-2
Divisional Record: 2-4
Conference Record: 6-6
Full Season Grade: B-
Looking Ahead to Next Season
Even with an average amount of salary-cap space, the Cardinals might still be pushing to sign back a number of players headed to free agency. Kenyan Drake and Larry Fitzgerald headline the offensive names, but equally important are the pair of OLBs Markus Golden and Hasson Reddick.
Arizona also has gaps at tight end, pass-rushing, could use another decent running back and all that hinges on assuming Kyler Murray is the answer at least in the short-term at quarterback.
Well, Budda Baker isn’t going anywhere. He’s the anchor of a solid secondary. And DeAndre Hopkins threatens to be the same weapon as next year.
Predicted Record for 2021 Season: 7-9
