Kansas City Chiefs 2020 Betting Record
Point Spread: 8-11
Total: Over-Under: 9-10
In 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history and the first time in 50 years. Head coach Andy Reid and superstar QB Patrick Mahomes won their first title in a 31-20 comeback win against the San Francisco 49ers. In the offseason, Mahomes became the NFL’s first 500-million dollar man, as he signed a 10-year contract extension.
Even as the Chiefs had limited cap space to work with, they were able to keep most of their starters. However, three notable players opted out of the season due to the NFL COVID-19 situation. RB Damien Williams, who totaled 498 yards and five TDs on 111 carries in 2019, and 3rd round draft pick OT Lucas Niang both sat out. As the NFL’s only active player who is also a doctor, RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif worked as an orderly at a long-term care facility in Canada to help combat the pandemic.

The Chiefs drafted Clyde Edwards-Helaire out of LSU with their first-round pick and he had an impressive rookie year in Williams’ absence. Kansas City was in prime position to compete for another title in 2020 and they, once again, had an excellent season. The Chiefs outperformed their online betting O/U win total of 11.5 and the sportsbook NFL betting odds listed them at +450 to repeat. While their season didn’t end in back-to-back championships, it did feature another Super Bowl appearance.
The Chiefs certainly did not suffer from a Super Bowl hangover. Instead, they started 4-0 and picked up right where they left off in 2019. Edwards-Helaire had an excellent NFL debut, with 138 yards on 25 attempts and a TD vs Houston in a 34-20 win. Fourth-round draft pick CB L’Jarius Sneed also recorded his first career interception in Week 1.
The Chiefs won an uncomfortably close OT game against the Los Angeles Chargers in a Week 2 NFL Matchup, courtesy of a 58-yard Harrison Butker FG. Aside from that, Kansas City cruised through the first four weeks of the season. In a Week 3 heavyweight Monday Night Football showdown, the Chiefs beat Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens 34-20. Their defense also forced four turnovers in Week 4 vs the New England Patriots, en route to a 26-10 win. Through four games the defense had given up the second-fewest points in the league.

2020 Second Quarter
After four weeks of elite defensive play, the Chiefs slipped up against the Las Vegas Raiders. Led by Derek Carr’s 3 TD passes, the Raiders managed to pick up 490 total yards and hand the Chiefs a rare 40-32 defeat at Arrowhead Stadium. Midweek, the Chiefs signed Le’Veon Bell, who had been released by the Jets, to add running back depth. He didn’t play the following Monday Night against the Buffalo Bills, but Kansas City beat Buffalo regardless as Edwards-Helaire picked up a career-high 161 yards on 26 carries and TE Travis Kelce added 2 TD receptions.
Bell made his debut against the Broncos in Week 7, totaling 39 yards on six carries. Mahomes didn’t have to do much in the 43-16 blowout win as Kansas City had four takeaways against a hapless Broncos offense. S Daniel Sorensen scored on a pick-six and Byron Pringle returned a kickoff 102 yards for a score.
In an NFL Week 8 matchup, the Chiefs covered one of the biggest spreads in recent memory. They were 20-point home favorites against the winless New York Jets and ended up winning by 27. WR Tyreek Hill had his first two-touchdown game of the season and he and Kelce combined for 207 receiving yards, as Mahomes threw five TD passes.
Point Spread: 3-1
Total: Over-Under: 2-2
Kelce managed to make it three straight games of over 100 receiving yards. He had 109 against the Jets, 159 in Week 9 vs the Carolina Panthers and 127, with a TD, in the rematch vs the Raiders.
During this same stretch of games, Hill had his first game of the season of over 100 receiving yards, with 113 and 2 TDs against Carolina. He then followed that up with 102 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders and a career-high 269 yards and three TDs against the Bucs in their Week 12 NFL matchup.
Mahomes was also excellent in the win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 37 of 49 passes for 462 yards and three touchdowns. S Tyrann Mathieu had two interceptions in the win against the Denver Broncos in Week 13.
The Chiefs were certainly rounding into form. They entered the home stretch of the season with a seven-game winning streak, despite losing four in a row against the spread.

Kansas City Chiefs 2020: Fourth Quarter
Kansas City turned the ball over a season-high four times against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 but still managed to win 33-27. With the win, the Chiefs clinched the AFC West for a fifth straight season and were within striking distance of clinching the AFC bye.
Edwards-Helaire suffered a high ankle sprain in the Week 15 win vs the New Orleans Saints which most likely meant he’d miss playoff time. His regular-season finished with 803 rushing yards on 181 carries and four touchdowns, along with 297 receiving yards.
The Chiefs had an opportunity to clinch the AFC bye in Week 16 vs the Atlanta Falcons and needed a fourth-quarter come back to do it. RB Darrel Williams posted 46 yards on 10 carries in Edwards-Helaire’s first game out. With the bye clinched and a ten-game winning streak, the Chiefs rested Mahomes and a bunch of other starters in NFL Week 16. Chad Henne made his first start at QB since 2014 in the loss to the Chargers.
Kansas City looked like the team to beat in the NFL. Another Super Bowl was certainly not out of the question after a stellar regular season.

Kansas City Chiefs 2020: Playoffs
The Chiefs were matched up with the Cleveland Browns, and former running back Kareem Hunt, in the divisional round. The Browns, who had defeated the Steelers in two straight weeks, were not going to be a walk in the park with the form they were in.
Kansas City entered this matchup as 7½-point favorites and took a 19-3 lead into halftime. To the Browns’ credit, they didn’t fold and managed to claw the game back within five points with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Neither team managed to score for the remainder of the game and the Chiefs advanced to the AFC Championship game for the third straight season.
Williams once again stepped up with 78 yards on 13 carries and both Kelce and Hill reached the 100 receiving yard threshold. Mahomes was solid, but not up to his usual standard of greatness, as he completed 21 of 30 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown.
The Chiefs were up against the Bills for the second time this year. However, this time was a little bit different as Buffalo carried an eight-game winning streak into the AFC championship game. The duo of Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs presented a challenge for the Chiefs defense.
Thankfully, the Chiefs were up to that challenge and also got Edwards-Helaire back from injury. The Chiefs defense made life hard for Allen, as they sacked him four times and he completed just 28 of his 48 passes. On the other hand, Mahomes was brilliant. He completed 29 of his 38 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns and led the Chiefs to a 38-24 win and second-straight Super Bowl appearance.
It was a monumental Super Bowl matchup as the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs took on the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers in Tampa. With a win, Brady would have more Super Bowl rings than any single NFL franchise. Meanwhile, the Chiefs could cement their place as the next NFL dynasty with two Super Bowls in a row.
What unfolded, unfortunately, was not as exciting as billed. It was a horror show for Kansas City bettors, as the three-point favorites Chiefs lost 31-9 and couldn’t get much going on offense with two starting tackles out. While Brady completed 21 of 29 passes for three touchdowns, Mahomes had a rare off day. He managed to complete just 26 of his 49 passes for 270 yards and threw two interceptions.
Edwards-Helaire managed to pick up 64 yards on nine carries but the Chief’s offensive points all came from Butker, as he made three field goals. While Brady cemented his already absurd legacy, the Chiefs suffered a reality check at the end of another incredible season.

Looking Ahead to Next Season
The Chief’s offensive line needs to be shored up as they released both Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz for salary cap relief. Kansas City could also use a pass rusher as the Chiefs ranked 19th in sacks in 2020.
This is Patrick Mahomes’ team and it’s going to be built around him as long as he’s in Kansas City. He had another MVP caliber season with 4740 passing yards, 38 TDs, and just six interceptions.
S Tyrann Mathieu made NFL first-team All-Pro for the second straight season and led the team in interceptions with 6. S Daniel Sorensen led the team in tackles, with 91 and the Chiefs should extend his contract.
Including the playoffs, the Chiefs went 0-4 ATS when Edwards-Helaire was out. He had a good rookie season with 804 rushing yards on 181 carries and 4 TDs. He was fourth among all rookies in rushing yards and should be an important part of Kansas City’s future.
Kelce was 2nd in the NFL in receiving yards and 5th in TDs. He’s the NFL’s best tight end by no small margin. Hill was 8th in receiving yards and 2nd in TDs and has been the x-factor on this Chiefs team for a while now.
Next season, the Chiefs have the best Super Bowl odds in the league at +450. They should certainly be motivated to win a second Super Bowl in three years after a disappointing end to their 2020 season.
