Seattle Seahawks Season 2020 Season Review

Seahawks 2020 Betting Record

Moneyline: 12-5

Point Spread: 8-9

Total (Over Record): 8-9

The 2020 Seahawks were a hard team to predict because the team was different the first half of the season compared to the second half. Seattle’s offense started very hot as Russell Wilson was the early MVP favorite after leading the Seahawks to a 5-0 record while averaging 33.8 points per game during that winning streak. The offense was great but their defense was historically bad at the midway point — giving up 30.4 points a game. Then the team seemed to switch gears. The offense cooled off as Russel Wilson’s numbers started to fade and the defense improved which helped Seattle win some low scoring games. By the end of the season, the offense was struggling and the defense was improved but not great.

Fix this now. @Seahawks @seahawksPR @PeteCarroll https://t.co/P2oFPv5w4p

First Quarter

Russ was cookin’ as the Seahawks offense took the NFL by storm. Pete Carroll went away from a run first approach and let Wilson sling the ball to his playmakers — Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf — which gave opposing defenses serious trouble. The (10-6) Dolphins were the only team on the Seahawks first quarter schedule that ended the season with a winning record, and that may have been a reason the Seahawks were able to get out to such a hot start.

Moneyline: 4-0

Point Spread: 4-0

Total (Over Record): 3-1

Grade: A+

Second Quarter

Seattle’s defensive struggles caught up to them in the second quarter of the season. In their two losses to the Cardinals and Bills the Seahawks gave up 37 and 44 points. Wilson came back down to earth after his sizzling hot start and made some mistakes while trying to keep up with these two teams. The second quarter made it apparent that the Seahawks defense needed to improve if they wanted to win the NFC West and make it to the playoffs.

Moneyline: 2-2

Point Spread: 1-3

Total (Over Record): 3-1

Grade: C-

Third Quarter

The defense turned things around in the third quarter of the season by holding teams under 20 points a game during this four game stretch. But as the defense showed improvements, the offense took steps backwards. The Seahawks scored 16 points in a loss to the Rams and 12 points in a loss to the Giants during the third quarter of the season. By the time they lost to the Giants in Week 13 the Seahawks were one of the toughest teams to predict and bet on.

Moneyline: 2-2

Point Spread: 1-3

Total (Over Record): 0-4

Grade: C-

Fourth Quarter

The NFC West race was tight with four games remaining. The Seahawks finished the season the same way they started it —  a four game winning streak, which helped them capture their first division title since 2016 and the No. 3 seed in the NFC. The final winning streak was powered by the defense as Seattle’s offense did not score more than 26 points in the final four games. The Seahawks were hot entering the playoffs but they were still yet to find their identity on offense. The pass heavy offense of the first half of the season turned more into a run-first approach that we are used to with a Pete Carroll offense.

Moneyline: 4-0

Point Spread: 2-2

Total (Over Record): 1-3

Grade: A-

We are so proud to have our story featured in @nytimes! 👏

With some innovative thinking and hard work from our players and staff, we were the only team in the NFL to play the entire season without any positive COVID-19 cases.

— Seattle Seahawks (@Seahawks) February 5, 2021

Divisional Record: 4-2

Conference Record: 9-3

Playoffs

Wild Card: Rams 30, Seahawks 20

The Seahawks hosted their division rivals the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. The teams split the regular season games with the home team winning both contests. The Rams dominated the game never allowing the Seahawks to take the lead. A 42-yard interception returned for a TD by Darious Williams in the second quarter was a big turning point in the game. The mistake by Wilson helped the Rams score 17-second quarter points which was ultimately the difference in the game. Having the lead the entire game allowed L.A. to run the ball and control the clock. RB Cam Akers finished the game with 131-rushing yards and one-TD on 28 carries.

Full Season Grade: B+

Looking Ahead to Next Season

Glaring Needs: Offensive Line

The only glaring weakness of the Seahawks this season was on the offensive line. The reason their offense sputtered out late in the season is the health of their offensive line. They only had two players on the line play all 16 games. The unit was one of the best to start the season but the lack of depth led to issues down the stretch as players missed games because of injuries. The Seahawks only played six games with their starting five offensive linemen on the field together this season. If they want to find their magic on offense again then they will need to add depth to their offensive line this offseason.

Obvious Strengths: QB and WR

Russell Wilson, D.K. Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett are a trio that has the respect of the entire NFL. Another pass catching option would definitely make this offense even more dangerous but it is not needed. Put a solid front five in front of Wilson and watch this offense cook next season.

Predicted Record for 2021 Season: 12-4

As long as Wilson is the Seahawks QB they will be putting up double-digit win totals each year. In Wilson’s nine year career as the starter of the Seahawks he has only one season with less than 10 wins. The defense should continue to improve as their front four has newly added veterans and some young talent that are developing nicely. The offense will bolster the line this offseason which will lead to more consistency from the unit. The NFC West will be tough again next season but Carroll knows how to win close games and will have his team in the hunt for another title next season. It will be interesting to see what this team does at the RB position with Cris Carson and Carlos Hyde set for free agency. Will they continue to stay with a run-first approach next season or follow the trend in the NFL and throw more and more on early downs? I say spend some money and draft picks on OL and let Russ Cook!

Steve Tsilimos

Football may have been the first word out of Steve (aka Tater) Tsilimos’ mouth. His father, a high school football coach, taught him all about football, basketball, and baseball from a young age. While playing all three sports at a small high school in Ohio, football quickly became the sport he loved and excelled. After high school, he went on to study Economics at The University of Chicago while playing cornerback on the football team. Over 10 years ago, as a young student-athlete, Steve developed his sports betting skills on the side. Hundreds of hours of film study mixed with a mind that loves numbers, he quickly understood what a good bet looked like. After college, he took his betting to the next level and passed the Series 7 to become a registered stocks and bonds trader. Later, he became Coach Tater when he coached high school football with his father for two seasons. Now living in the jungles of Costa Rica, he uses his deep understanding of stats and trends to help him find the best bets.
