The Los Angeles Rams look to continue a strong start to the 2020 NFL season, traveling to San Francisco to take on the 49ers with a 4-1 record, leaving them behind only the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West. While the Rams have suffered just one loss, a three-point setback to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, the 49ers have struggled to get things back in the right direction, losing two straight ahead of Week 6.
San Francisco lost to the Miami Dolphins 43-17 in Week 5 while falling 25-20 to the Philadelphia Eagles just one game prior. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo returned from injury against the Dolphins but was unable to spark the offence and was benched after one half of play.
Let’s take a closer look at the Rams vs 49ers matchup.
|Game: Rams (4-1) vs 49ers (2-3)
Location: Levi’s Stadium

NFL Betting Lines
|Team||Point Spread||Moneyline||Over/Under||Team Total|
Moneyline: Rams -165 | 49ers +145
The Rams are favored in a tough road matchup with a rival, although home games look quite a bit different without fans filling the stadium. Even still, the Rams enter this matchup appearing to be the team playing far better, which explains why they’re road favorites over the 49ers.
I’m not overly interested in the Los Angeles moneyline due to the odds and the low potential return on a bet, but for bettors who believe that the 49ers will right the ship, grabbing them here at +145 is decent. Considering the recent struggles, though, targeting the San Francisco moneyline does come with plenty of risk.
Pick: Rams to win
Point Spread: Rams -3½
I’d prefer to see this line move to three in favor of the Rams, but even slightly higher, the road team appears to be in position to get the job done and move to 5-1 on the season. Although I expect we see a close game and the 49ers could certainly pull off the “upset,” sticking with the Rams as 3½-point favorites behind the strong play of Jared Goff and his talented pass-catchers is a fine target.
Pick: Rams to cover
Over/Under: 51½ points
Although the 49ers have played to the over in three of five games and the Rams have done so in two of three, this game has the makings of a defensive battle with fewer points than we’ve seen in recent weeks. Although the Rams offense has plenty of firepower, and if healthy, Garoppolo and the 49ers can score often, defense will be a focus in Week 6.
The Rams have allowed just 90 points this season, while both teams average less than 335 total yards allowed defensively.
Pick: Under 51½
Final Score: Rams 24, 49ers 17
Props for Rams vs. 49ers
If you expect a defensive battle between two familiar opponents, your approach to prop bets should be affected as well. Let’s take a look at some of the better bets to make.
Rams to Win by 7-10 Points: +550
On the surface, this appears to be the sweet spot for a potential Rams win. While the 49ers are likely to receive plenty of love from bettors, I think the Rams get it done and do so by either a touchdown or a touchdown and a field goal. Taking the odds at +550 for Los Angeles to finish somewhere within those two spots is a decent prop option.
First Scoring Play: 49ers Field Goal +290
While I’m a believer in the Rams to leave Levi’s Stadium with a victory, I think the 49ers come out and look to prove that their offensive struggles in Week 5 were somewhat of a fluke. They’ll put together a nice drive early, but the Rams defense will stall it just before San Francisco can put six on the scoreboard. The 49ers will settle for a field goal, and with these odds, I’ll target that outcome.
Total TDs In The Game: Under 5½ +105
This is another nod to the fact that this could be a defensive battle throughout. While the two teams may break through a couple of times each, targeting under 5½ touchdowns is the way to go.
