Niners Last Week
San Francisco was on the wrong end of a 24-20 home loss against Arizona in Week 1 as Garoppolo completed 19-of-33 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Raheem Mostert had 56 rushing yards while adding four catches for 95 yards and one score, but the Niners were held to just seven second-half points while allowing Arizona to score 14 fourth-quarter points.
The Niners allowed Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray to pass for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception while adding a stellar 91 rushing yards and another score. Murray hooked up with Pro Bowl wide receiver Deandre Hopkins a whooping 14 times for 151 yards while running back Kenyan Drake rushed for 60 yards in the win.
Garoppolo led the Niners to the Arizona 16-yard-line before throwing an incomplete pass to Trent Taylor on fourth-and-5 that ended Frisco’s hopes of a comeback.
“We were in that situation plenty of times last year,” Garoppolo said. “When you get in those situations, obviously it’s a little different today without the crowd, that game-day feel wasn’t there. It just comes down to execution. In the last minutes like that, every play is crucial, every yard is crucial. We just didn’t execute.”
- 49ers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games on fieldturf.
- 49ers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 2.
- 49ers are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games as a favorite.
Jets Last Week
The Jets fell to AFC East division rival Buffalo 27-17 in Week 1 as Sam Darnold completed 21-of-35 passes for 215 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Frank Gore and Le’Veon Bell were held to 24 and 14 rushing yards, respectively. They outscored the Bills 14-6 in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a 21-3 halftime deficit while allowing Bills quarterback Josh Allen to pass for a career-high 312 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. The Jets opened the game with a trio of three-and-out drives while getting a pitiful 23 yards of offense and one first down on their first five possessions.
“It was about as bad of a start offensively as we could’ve had,” Jets head coach Adam Gase said. “We just really did not play well. It’s disappointing in the aspect that, just watching the guys work all week and the excitement level coming into this game. We’ve got a lot to work on. We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to get fixed.”
- Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.
- Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a home underdog.
- Jets are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 games on fieldturf.
- Jets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in September.
- Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- 49ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
There’s no sense in beating around with my pick on this Week 2 pairing. I’m expecting San Francisco to jump all over the Jets early to get the convincing win and ATS cover as a manageable touchdown road favorite and apparently, a whopping 78% of public bettors agree.
While these rivals have not met since 2016 and play once every four years, Frisco has won two of the last three meetings, though New York recorded a 27-17 overtime road win the last time they met. This time around, the Niners are the far superior team and I expect the reigning NFC champs to be highly motivated after losing their opener. The Niners and the road team in this infrequently series, are an identical 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. I like Frisco to dominate and to cover the chalk.
