Through the first seven weeks of the 2020 NFL season, the AFC has been an interesting conference to monitor in regards to NFL betting. With nine teams at .500 or better and three others with 2-4 records, the playoff picture appears to be fairly wide open, at least in terms of the teams who may wind up battling for one of the Wild Card spots.
Teams like the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers and the one-loss Kansas City Chiefs, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens won’t often be underdogs, but if they are, it’s a good spot to start when searching for decent betting options.
Finding a good underdog bet isn’t always easy, but in Week 8 of the season, there are a few teams who could be targets either getting points or simply to win the game outright. Although it’s unlikely you’ll find a heavy underdog who’s highly-touted as a strong moneyline bet, there are certainly plenty of options to consider this week.
New England Patriots (+3½) vs Buffalo Bills
There is an obvious reason to have a concern about backing the New England Patriots currently, but a Bill Belichick-led team deserves at least some level of confidence that it’ll bounce back. The Patriots have suffered three tough losses to fall to 2-4 on the season, and going into Buffalo to face the 5-2 Bills will be a very tall task.
It was a near-disaster for the Bills in Week 7, though, as they slipped up and nearly lost to the New York Jets, eventually winning 18-10. The Bills have looked good at times early in the season, but prior to the Jets game, they had lost two straight, albeit against strong competition in the Chiefs and Titans.
The play of Patriots quarterback Cam Newton will be key in this game, but if he’s able to shake off the rust from time missed due to COVID-19, they’ll have a shot to defeat the Bills on the road.
Las Vegas Raiders (+125) vs Cleveland Browns
The Raiders have the pieces and upside to do damage this season but boast just a 3-3 record. After defeating the rival Kansas City Chiefs on the road, they proceeded to fall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 45-20, with defense proving to be a major issue. Although that remains true ahead of their matchup with the Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield and company have their own concerns.
Cleveland has dealt with NFL injuries, losing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for the season and are already missing top running back Nick Chubb as well. Although the Browns are 5-2 on the season and 3-0 at home, they got off to a dreadful start in Week 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals, eventually rallying to win 37-34.
It’s a tough cross-country trip for the Raiders, which doesn’t make this an easy pick, but I do believe the Raiders have the talent to pull off a crucial road victory and get back above the .500 mark.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+3½) vs Baltimore Ravens
The undefeated Steelers head to face the rival Baltimore Ravens in Week 8, and it appears oddsmakers are backing Lamar Jackson and company to defend their home turf. The Ravens have looked good this season, but their one big test came against the Chiefs, a game they lost 34-20, leaving many to wonder just how good this team can be.
On the other side of the game, the Steelers also haven’t faced many tough matchups but went on the road to knock off the aforementioned Titans and also rolled past the Browns to the tune of a 38-7 victory. Pittsburgh has hit a stride, and although I believe the Ravens are a better team than Tennessee, it’s hard not to like the Steelers to lose by a field goal or less or potentially win the game outright when making your NFL picks.
