2020 Team Analysis and Schedule
The New York Giants began playing in the National Football League in 1925, and they have had some great periods of success since that time. The last few years have not been too kind to the New York Giants, but they started to show signs of progress in 2019.
The Giants will be looking for their first playoff experience since 2016, and they are looking for their first NFC East Division title since 2011. The BetUS sportsbook tags them at +700 to win the division. The NFC East looks to be wide open again this year, which could give the Giants a chance.
New York will start the season with a Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and will wrap up the season against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants will take on each team from the NFC West and AFC North divisions this season.
With so much young talent, 2020 will be a very important season for the New York Giants.

New York Giants News & Picks
Last Year’s History
The 2019 season did not go well for the New York Giants, and it cost head coach Pat Shurmur his job after just two seasons. Last year also marked the final time that quarterback Eli Manning started for the Giants.
Manning was replaced by rookie Daniel Jones after just two games, and Jones struggled throughout much of the season. The Giants won their first two games under Jones but then went on to lose nine straight games.
Running back Saquon Barkley also struggled to stay healthy last season, and that was a huge blow to the offense. The Giants were able to pick up wins in Weeks 15 and 16, but their playoff chances were long gone by then.
The Giants went just 2-4 in NFC East games, and they failed to beat a team with a winning record. New York has made many changes to its roster in hopes of having a better season in 2020.
New York Giants Key players
The Giants selected Jones with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he was given the starting job after just two games. New York believes that Jones is the future of the franchise, and he showed signs of promise a season ago.
Jones completed just 61.9 percent of his passes a season ago, and his 12 interceptions were a bit of a concern. The Giants expect a better season from Jones in year two, and a new coaching staff will make a big difference.
Even though Barkley battled through injuries in 2019, he still managed to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards. Barkley is averaging 4.8 yards per carry since joining the league in 2018. He is one of the most explosive players in the NFL and he is a long shot MVP candidate in 2020.
Barkley is also a weapon in the passing game and racked up more than 2,000 offensive yards during his rookie campaign. The Giants need a healthy Barkley to take some pressure off of their second-year quarterback.
Evan Engram burst onto the scene during his rookie year in 2017 but has struggled to repeat that performance. The tight end has battled injuries in each of the last two seasons, but he is extremely important to the New York Giants offense.
Engram had just three touchdown receptions a season ago, and the Giants need him to be a top option in the red zone. If Engram can stay on the field, then the Giants offense should take a huge step forward this season.
New York Giants New Additions
The Giants needed some help on the defensive side of the ball, so the team made that a priority in free agency. New York was able to sign a pair of defenders that should take over starting roles, and both players are still young.
LB Blake Martinez will become the leader of the defense with the Giants, and CB James Bradberry will become the top cornerback in the secondary.
Offensive tackle Andrew Thomas was taken by the Giants with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Georgia product should start from day one and will provide extra protection for Daniel Jones.
New York Giants Key Subtractions
New York didn’t lose a ton of starters from the 2019 season, and that should provide some continuity heading into the 2020 season. One of the most notable departures was quarterback Eli Manning, who decided to retire.
The biggest loss will be OT Mike Reimers. Reimers started 14 games for the Giants in 2019, and only allowed three sacks.
WR Cody Lattimer has also moved on, and that will take away a weapon from the offense. S Michael Thomas was forced into action a ton in 2019, but he will not be back with the team this season.
The NFC East is filled with some of the most storied franchises in the National Football League, but the division has not been strong in recent years. Most seasons, a record of 9-7 is good enough to win the NFC East, which gives the Giants a chance.
The Philadelphia Eagles won the NFC East a season ago with a record of 9-7. Dallas finished in second place with a record of 8-8.
The Giants were able to sweep both games against the Washington Redskins in 2019, but they lost their other four divisional games. New York should finish ahead of Washington again in 2020, but they need to find a way to beat the Cowboys and Eagles.
The Giants saw their first season with Daniel Jones as their quarterback as a very up-and-down one. Jones finished the season with over 3,000 passing yards but also threw the football to the other team too often. In his rookie season, Jones threw 12 interceptions and was sacked 28 times.
The man in the offense is former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley had an amazing rookie season and backed it up with some good numbers in 2019.
Barkley played in 13 games and picked up just over 1,000 yards on the ground. Opposing defenses will have to make sure they keep him in their sights at all times in 2020.
Darius Slayton has emerged as the top receiving threat for the Giants. The 23-year-old from Auburn will look to improve upon 2019, in which he caught eight touchdown passes.
New York Giants Defense
The Giants allowed more than 28 points per game a season ago, and that unit has to take a huge step forward this season. The signings of Martinez and Bradberry should help, but there are several other players that have to improve.
New York gave up more than 377 passing yards per game in 2019, and the team had just 36 sacks. The Giants must find a way to get some more pressure on opposing quarterbacks if they want to improve on the defensive side of the ball.
An improved offense should help the defense as well, but this is a huge point of focus for the Giants heading into 2020.
